Last year, Max had pneumonia. He was utterly miserable—feverish, achy, and exhausted. As the doctor laid out the recovery plan, he pitifully lamented, “Why me? I have to sleep alone? I can’t go out? I need to be quiet? What did I do to deserve this?”
Fast forward to yesterday, when I found myself diagnosed with pneumonia after days of feeling under the weather. It peaked with a bout of shortness of breath that was alarming enough to drag me to Urgent Care. After the x-rays and blood tests, the doctor delivered his orders with a stern demeanor:
“Rest as much as you can. No sharing the bed with your husband or kids. Avoid sharing food and drinks. Enjoy long steam showers. Talk as little as possible. Take frequent naps. And be aware that the Tylenol with Codeine might make you feel a bit loopy.”
He then asked, “Any questions?” With a hint of glee, I replied, “Yes! Why me? What did I do to deserve this?!”

In summary, both Max and I found ourselves asking, “Why me?” when faced with the trials of pneumonia. It’s a reminder that sometimes life throws unexpected challenges our way, but there’s always support and resources available when we need them.
