London has become one of my absolute favorite cities in Europe. Before welcoming my daughter, I had explored this vibrant city multiple times. Traveling with her was a delightful adventure, albeit different. Fortunately, my sister, who lives in London with her young child, provided us with insider tips on making our trip enjoyable and kid-friendly. Here’s a curated list of activities that families with children will love!
- Public Transportation Wonders: Coming from NYC, I thought I was well-versed in public transport, but London offers a unique experience. Unlike NYC, where strollers must be folded on buses and subways, London’s black cabs allow you to bring your entire stroller inside without hassle. And don’t miss out on riding a double-decker bus! My daughter was thrilled to sit on the top deck, enjoying the sights of the city.
- Shopping at Marks & Spencer: This store truly has it all—clothing, groceries, home essentials, and even beauty products. The prices are quite reasonable, making it easy to find fashionable outfits for the kids. While in the U.S. we have chains like Duane Reade, London has Boots, where you can pick up everything from snacks to personal care items.
- Battersea Park Children’s Zoo: This charming zoo is a must-visit, and we loved it so much that we returned twice during our last trip! Although our recent visit was limited to one day due to weather, the variety of animals—from donkeys to African Grey Parrots—kept us entertained. The zoo also features a fantastic children’s area and a café for snacks.
- Explore London Walks: For a fun and educational experience, consider joining one of the London Walks tours. While the two-hour duration might not be suitable for very young children, older kids will enjoy themed walks, such as the Harry Potter on Location tour.
- Marvel at Harrods: Known worldwide, Harrods is not just a shopping destination; it’s an experience! Families should visit not only to shop but to admire the stunning displays. Tell your kids it’s a “museum,” and they’ll be captivated by the lavish decorations. Plus, there are plenty of dining options available.
- Visit The Royal Mews: After snapping pictures at Buckingham Palace, take a short stroll to The Royal Mews. Children will be fascinated by the carriages and horses, including the iconic Rolls Royce Phantom VI used for royal weddings. The interactive children’s area lets kids dress a coachman and design their own carriages.
- National Army Museum’s Kids Zone: The Kids Zone at the National Army Museum guarantees hours of excitement. My daughter and her cousin were constantly engaged during our visit, enjoying interactive exhibits designed to teach while they play.
- Iconic Sights: The London Eye, Sea Life Aquarium, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey are all conveniently located in one area. Start with a ride on the London Eye for breathtaking views, then explore the aquarium before heading to see Big Ben. This iconic clock tower is a must-see!
- Burger Cravings Satisfied at Byron: If you find yourselves longing for a good burger, Byron is the place to go. They even have an incredible vegetarian burger that is sure to impress anyone in your party.
- Hands-On Learning at The British Museum: While the museum is home to priceless artifacts, it also offers engaging “Hands On” areas where kids can interact with exhibits. This immersive experience is perfect for sparking curiosity in visitors of all ages.
Visiting London with kids is a fantastic adventure. Keep in mind that jet lag can be tough on everyone, so be sure to take your time. It’s okay if you can’t do everything—what matters is creating lasting memories together. Plus, leaving some sights unseen gives you a perfect excuse to return!
