A Prayer for My Daily Journey

Dear Lord, as I embark on my daily commute, I humbly ask for your guidance. This morning, I’m feeling the effects of a sleepless night—my little one woke up at 4:00 a.m. for a feeding, and I could truly use a boost of caffeine to get my day started.

Speaking of coffee, could you please work some magic on the Starbucks drive-thru? Maybe a special “fast pass” for busy moms like me who are juggling babies and work would be nice. After all, those in flip-flops probably aren’t rushing anywhere important!

As the traffic lights flick between red, green, and yellow without me moving an inch, help me cultivate patience. And while you’re at it, please remind the driver ahead of me to put their phone down and focus on the road.

When I finally pass that distracted driver, who seems to be in a world of their own texting or animatedly chatting on their phone, help me remember that my little ones are listening. Grant me the wisdom to keep cool or, at the very least, provide me with a delicious breakfast pastry to munch on, so I can stay silent for a moment.

Lord, bless those drivers who stop at flashing yellow lights—they may not know the rules of the road, but I’ll forgive them. I ask for your support for the construction workers I see daily, standing around but seemingly not getting anything done. May they have the skills to clear the way for me!

As I spot what looks like a teenager behind the wheel of an enormous SUV, remind me of my own youthful driving days. Surely, we’ve learned enough to improve safety standards for the younger generation. Perhaps no driving until 18, with safety helmets until 21? That could be a game-changer!

If I find myself putting on makeup in the preschool parking lot, or needing to pump while driving, shield me from the judgmental gazes of others—especially those truckers who should understand the life of a busy mom.

Above all, I pray for a smooth return home after work, with the kids intact and minimal whining for fast food. Oh, how tempting that greasy burger sounds right now!

And when the kids are finally in bed, and I glance lovingly at my partner, thinking about adding to our family, please remind me of the time my son attempted to “play” with a sippy cup in rush hour traffic while his sister cheered him on. Goldfish are much easier—no late-night cries for food or messes to clean up! Though let’s be real, I’d take cleaning up after a pet over a car seat any day.

Amen.
