A YouTube Obsession: My Child’s Love for Plastic Toys
It all began quite innocently. My daughter, Lily, became fascinated with the world of animated shows, particularly “Paw Patrol.” So, during those moments when I needed a quick shower or to whip up dinner, I turned to YouTube on the iPad, searching for “Paw Patrol” content to keep her entertained. She quickly became enamored with videos featuring Kinder Surprise Eggs, where a woman with long, colorful nails and a high-pitched, somewhat patronizing tone would unveil toys from plastic eggs, sometimes buried in Play-Doh—a bizarre concept that I still can’t wrap my head around.
At first, it was just background noise while I took a breather. I’d scan for any inappropriate content and then tune out the incessant sounds emanating from the iPad, desperate for a few minutes without a toddler glued to my leg.
As Lily grew older, her interests evolved, and so did the toy video landscape on YouTube. Superheroes became her latest obsession, which meant watching adults unwrap action figures and discuss the toys’ “articulation,” “gimmicks,” and other intricate details. The thrill of “blind bags” was particularly exhilarating for her; it seems all kids have a soft spot for surprises.
These videos are like oddly captivating advertisements for toys, somehow far more engaging than traditional commercials. I often pondered who creates these videos and whether they’re on the payroll of toy companies—if so, they’re not just silly but incredibly savvy.
Regardless of their intent, these videos have successfully hooked my child—brilliantly so. The anticipation of unveiling a toy is heightened by the flashy packaging and the amplified “crinkle” sounds that accompany each reveal. It’s like toddler candy, and I can’t help but recall the longing for toys from my childhood—Cabbage Patch Kids, My Little Pony, and Barbie dolls. Back then, I would dream about them, imagining the thrill of buying one and opening the box in excitement.
Today, kids don’t need to rely on imagination. With a simple click on YouTube, all their toy dreams come to life. My daughter not only knows precisely what toy she desires but also its price, which combinations are available, and where to find them (it’s always Walmart!).
Her constant requests for toys, candy, or even candy-shaped toys are driving me up the wall. Recently, she somehow accessed my Amazon account and ordered a Batcave along with several action figures. While I was furious, I couldn’t help but admire her tech-savvy skills for a three-year-old.
Now, I’ve secured my Amazon account, and I’m contemplating restrictions on her toy video access. But honestly, it feels like taking away a fix from someone with a bad habit. I’ve grown accustomed to those brief moments of peace when I can catch my breath and reclaim my identity for a few minutes.
So, thank you, YouTube. You’ve ensnared both of us in this plastic toy vortex, and there’s no going back.
