The Struggle of the Early Rising Parent

It’s 7:23 AM, and I’ve already been awake for an exhausting hour and eight minutes. On a Saturday, no less!

In our household, waking up before 7 AM is strictly forbidden, yet here I am, wide awake. Honestly, encountering me before the clock strikes seven is not a pleasant experience for anyone.

So, here I sit, wishing the day would fast-forward so I could retreat back to bed. But since that isn’t going to happen, here’s my plan instead:

  1. Sobbing. It’s totally valid to mourn the peaceful lie-ins that seem forever lost.
  2. Estimating my kids’ worth on eBay (without mentioning their early rising habits, of course).
  3. Grumbling about neighbors whose homes remain shrouded in darkness.
  4. Wishing I hadn’t watched ‘just one more’ episode of my latest obsession last night.
  5. Scrolling through social media to connect with fellow sleep-deprived parents.
  6. Creating rules and reward charts to keep the kids in bed until 7 AM (knowing full well these will get tossed aside next weekend).
  7. Having breakfast, even though it means lunch will be served at 10:30 AM.
  8. Drafting a message to the makers of that toddler clock to express my utter disappointment—my child figured out how to “bring the sun up” on the second day! Now, the sun makes its grand appearance at 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00 AM randomly.
  9. Dreaming about all the things I could accomplish if only I weren’t so utterly drained.
  10. Falling asleep and repeating this cycle for the remainder of the day.

See you all bright and early at 6:00 AM tomorrow!
