Thanksgiving at our home has its own special rhythm. Beyond offering a prayer before we dive into the feast, we have a cherished tradition of sharing what we’re grateful for. As we gather around, it’s hard to ignore that just before indulging in one of the grandest meals of the year—after snacking on an array of treats—everyone seems to express gratitude for food. Common themes of thankfulness include health, family, shelter, freedom, our livelihoods, and, of course, our children. While those are all beautiful sentiments, here are 11 unique things I truly appreciate…
- I’m grateful for kids who manage to sleep in until at least 8 a.m. Even better are the little ones who, upon waking, head straight to the living room, tune into the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, pour themselves a glass of chocolate milk, and blissfully let me sleep until 9 a.m. Thankful doesn’t even begin to cover it!
- I’m thankful that we aren’t a family that participates in any Turkey Trot or 5k run on Thanksgiving. I admire those who want to stay active on a day dedicated to feasting, but last year, when I thought about joining a local race, I quickly decided to stay on the couch instead.
- Wine is a blessing. I love the big bottles.
- I appreciate family members who come over to our Thanksgiving gathering and engage the kids with football, Wii, Xbox, Uno, or any form of entertainment while I’m busy preparing a massive meal. Honestly, they could be teaching my kids how to launch rockets in the backyard for all I care. As long as the kids are occupied while I wrestle a fifty-pound turkey out of a ridiculously hot oven, they are my heroes.
- I’m thankful for getting through the day without my kids bickering with each other. (A rare feat!)
- Similarly, I’m thankful for a peaceful holiday where the adults also manage to get along. (Another rarity!)
- Any day I don’t have to squeeze into a bathing suit—especially while surrounded by heaps of food—is a day to celebrate. July 4th pales in comparison.
- Did I mention the wine?
- I’m grateful for those who swoop in after the Thanksgiving meal to clear every plate, utensil, and glass off the tables, forming a cleanup crew in my kitchen that works like a well-oiled machine. When everything’s washed, dried, and put away, I feel an overwhelming urge to hug them and maybe even twirl them around in sheer appreciation.
- I’m thankful that our home isn’t the venue for any other holiday gatherings.
- And of course, I’m thankful for leftovers—they’re practically a holiday gift in themselves.
