Our Homemade Lava Lamp Adventure

Our Homemade Lava Lamp Adventureself insemination kit

Today, I came across an intriguing DIY experiment for creating homemade lava lamps while browsing Pinterest, and I couldn’t resist bookmarking it for a future project. Unfortunately, I left the browser open, and my curious little one, Jake, spotted it. “Oh wow! Can we try that today?” he eagerly asked. Of course, my sweet boy, we can!

I gathered measuring cups, vegetable oil, and a glass jar, only to realize that we were out of food coloring. Jake’s excitement quickly turned to disappointment. “Don’t worry, buddy. When Dad gets home, I’ll get us some food coloring,” I reassured him.

Once Jeff returned, I kept my promise. Since there’s a Whole Foods just five minutes away, I called ahead to confirm they had food coloring in stock. They did! Relief washed over me as I arrived, only to find that the food coloring cost a whopping TWENTY DOLLARS. I stood in the aisle for five minutes, debating whether to spend the extra fifteen bucks or drive the 15 minutes to the Giant for a cheaper option. Imagining Jake’s hopeful face pushed me to make the purchase.

At checkout, the clerk asked how my day was going. I chuckled and shared my frustration about the price of food coloring, to which she suggested I should have gone to Giant instead. You’re right, I thought, and left the store empty-handed.

Undeterred, I drove to Giant, found the food coloring, and patiently waited in line while reading about a celebrity baby. Just as I was about to pay, I realized I had left my wallet at Whole Foods. Panic set in as I drove back, praying it was still there. Luckily, it was! I grabbed the expensive food coloring and rolled my eyes at the situation, promising myself not to pin any more science experiments for the kids.

Finally, I returned home to an excited Jake ready for our lava lamp adventure. We mixed the oil, salt, water, and food coloring into the jar and watched… and watched. “Is it supposed to do something?” Jake asked, looking perplexed. Yes, my dear, it was supposed to work, but alas, it didn’t. I had to blame the all-natural, plant-based food coloring.

Pinterest, I think we need a break. (Again.)
