Women often struggle with accepting compliments, don’t they? It’s almost as if we are wired to respond with anything but a simple “Thank you.” Instead, we find ourselves justifying praise with excuses, redirecting the spotlight, or deflecting compliments back to the giver.
Picture this scenario:
“I adore your dress!”
“Oh, thanks! Your outfit is stunning too! I mean, who knew oversized sweaters were so chic?” (Said without even noticing that she’s in sweatpants and a tee that boldly declares, ‘Check out my Box’ with a boom box illustration.)
“Your party was absolutely amazing!”
“Thanks! I had so much help. My friend Lisa brought the best snacks, and the caterer really outdid themselves. Oh, and let’s not forget the balloon artist from Party City…”
“You’ve lost weight!”
“Oh, it’s these jeans! They’re just good at hiding everything. Honestly, I got them on clearance, or else I’d never have bought them at full price!”
It’s a bit disheartening, isn’t it? Imagine if men reacted this way:
“Nice shirt, dude.”
“Cheers! I was just thinking how great your shoes look. Those are still in style?”
“What a fantastic gathering, bro.”
“Thanks, man! I had some help… My wife marinated the chicken and I let the grill go for a year, so it had that unique charred flavor. And hey, it wouldn’t be a party without some ice-cold brews!”
“You’re looking fit lately.”
“Really? It’s just these Dockers with adjustable bands. They’re a lifesaver! Plus, I got them on sale at Target.”
It’s amusing to think about how we turn compliments into a lengthy discussion on why we don’t deserve them. The truth is, when someone compliments you, they want to hear a genuine “Thank you,” not a lengthy explanation about why they might be wrong.
P.S. I regret calling anyone out earlier; that was unkind! What I meant to say is, you look fabulous! By the way, are those new shoes? They’re great on you, but then again, everything looks good on you!

In summary, we often struggle to graciously accept compliments, making excuses instead of simply enjoying the moment. Imagine how much better it could be if we embraced compliments with open arms and a heartfelt “Thank you!”
