I Became a Mom and Unleashed My Inner Badass
A few years back, I went through a phase where I donned skirts regularly. Growing up as a tomboy, I preferred jeans and t-shirts over dresses. In my late 20s, I decided—likely influenced by social media—that it was time to embrace femininity. I thought I should start wearing skirts, cute tops, and heels to fit the traditional notion of what it means to be “pretty.”
At first, I enjoyed it. I liked the way I felt—feminine and attractive. But deep down, it didn’t feel authentic. I felt like a fraud. Compliments on my outfits and the length of my hair, which was a nod to the idea that short hair isn’t feminine, flowed in. My partner was supportive, which was nice. Yet, despite the compliments, something was amiss.
Becoming a mother helped me reconnect with my true self. My authentic self sports a super short, vibrant red haircut, often styled into a faux hawk during the summer. I gravitate towards blue jeans and black tank tops, even if my pale skin appears even paler in them. When it comes to makeup, I lean toward dark eye looks (when I choose to wear any), disregarding the trendy “no makeup” look. And let’s be real—I’d pick knee-high black boots over heels any day.
My true self rejects the notion that I should conform to societal expectations of how a woman “should” look, dress, or behave. I want to feel like a badass, and for me, that means expressing myself through my hair, fashion, and makeup choices. When I embrace this identity, I feel empowered, capable of achieving anything. A glance in the mirror that reveals an awesome reflection boosts my happiness, which in turn radiates positivity to my loved ones—husband, kids, friends, and family.
I’m not claiming to be a badass in the traditional sense, but when I feel that way, I believe I can conquer the world.
I’m not suggesting you need to abandon dresses and heels; rather, do what resonates with your true self. It’s essential to engage in activities or styles that allow you to feel like a warrior, ready to tackle life’s challenges and be your most incredible self. For me, that’s a bold red faux hawk; for you, it could be something completely different. Whatever it is, embrace it unapologetically, free from societal judgment. After all, as a mom, I don’t have time to cater to anyone else’s opinions.
So go ahead—be a badass.
