My Kids Don’t Always Take Precedence

Sometimes, I have to admit, my kids don’t always take precedence. There are moments when I’m preparing dinner, and I can’t just pause everything to help my son remove a shoe he decided to put on for fun. Other times, while I’m folding laundry, I ask my daughter to be patient for a few minutes before I can join her for a game of Toddler Tag. Even when I’m on a phone call, I may choose to finish my conversation before getting them a snack.

My children are undeniably two of the most cherished people in my life. They’re witty, playful, and full of life—traits that remind me of myself. Although they are still young, I strive to teach them essential values like manners, kindness, forgiveness, and yes, patience.

The Importance of Waiting

Life is full of waiting. Whether it’s standing at a bus stop, waiting for food at a diner, or even anticipating the next episode of a favorite show while indulging in a secret midnight snack, waiting is a part of our existence. I believe it’s important to instill this understanding in my children early on.

Of course, there are times when my attention is urgently needed—like when a loud crash is followed by tears, or when a sibling quarrel escalates. I also make it a point to set aside chores to engage with them in the moment, whether it’s helping with a shoe or putting aside laundry to dance along to their favorite songs.

Yet, I don’t do this every time. I want my kids to understand that they are not the center of the universe. They are special and significant, but part of my duty as a mother is to prepare them to be respectful, capable, and successful individuals in society. Learning to wait is a crucial lesson; they must cultivate patience and learn to entertain themselves while they wait for what they desire.

My kids don’t always come first, and I hope that one day they’ll appreciate this perspective. If not, well, I hope I can budget for their therapy!

In summary, while my children are incredibly important to me, they don’t always take precedence. Teaching them the value of patience and the reality of waiting is a vital part of their upbringing. This approach will help them grow into well-rounded individuals who understand that life doesn’t always revolve around their immediate wants.
