Growing up on Long Island was never dull! With its rich history, from the opulent “Gold Coast” to the stunning beaches along the North and South Shores, as well as numerous lighthouses, nature trails, museums, and dining options, there’s always something to do here. I’m thrilled to raise my son in such a vibrant place and share its wonders with him. After much thought, here are my top ten family-friendly activities on Long Island!
- Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center, Riverhead. This aquarium is a treasure trove of fun and educational experiences! Kids can explore both indoor and outdoor exhibits, enjoy a butterfly garden, watch sea lions perform, and participate in the seasonal Penguin Egg Hunt. Other highlights include the Interactive Salt Marsh and special programs like “Scientist for a Day” and a unique “Sleep with the Fishes” overnight adventure!
- Long Island Children’s Museum, Garden City. This interactive museum is designed specifically for kids, with various spaces tailored to different learning styles. Energetic children will love the “TotSpot” and “Climb It” areas. Kids can even step inside a giant bubble at the “Bubble” exhibit, become news anchors at “Communication Station,” and discover rotating exhibits.
- The Cradle of Aviation, Garden City. With over 30 hands-on exhibits, including interactive cockpits, a planetarium, and a carousel, the Cradle of Aviation is a must-visit! The new Junior Jet Club is a fantastic space for kids up to age 6, featuring kid-friendly cockpits and engaging aerospace-themed activities.
- Long Island Game Farm, Manorville. This wildlife park and zoo offers exciting opportunities for families to learn about various animals through engaging exhibits. Enjoy a train ride, feed baby animals, or take a pony ride for a day filled with animal fun!
- Greenport’s Antique Carousel, Greenport. Located in the charming town of Greenport, this antique carousel is over a century old and housed in a protective glass enclosure. After a delightful ride, treat yourself to some homemade ice cream at Sandpiper Ice Cream (142 Main Street). You’ve earned it after all that walking!
- Fairs, Festivals, and Farmer’s Markets. Year-round, Long Island buzzes with events! Many local fire departments host summer “Fireman’s Fairs,” while Northport’s Cow Harbor Day in the fall is a highlight. Streets close to cars, allowing shops and restaurants to spill outdoors. Don’t miss out on the year-round farmer’s markets showcasing incredible local produce and seafood!
- Montauk Lighthouse, Montauk. As the first lighthouse in New York and the fourth oldest in the U.S., Montauk Lighthouse is a historical gem. Climb the 137 iron steps for some exercise and breathtaking ocean views or stroll the scenic trail around the lighthouse.
- Fire Island. Looking for an adventurous day with the kids? Take one of the three ferries from the South Shore to Fire Island! This barrier island between Long Island and the Atlantic Ocean features pristine beaches, delightful outdoor eateries, and quaint gift shops. Cars are prohibited here, so enjoy biking, beach activities, seashell decorating, and hiking through the Sunken Forest!
- Seal Walk, Oakdale. This activity is perfect for cooler months! Bundle up, enjoy fresh air, and observe seals in their natural habitat. Be sure to book in advance as spots tend to fill up quickly!
- Dining Out. Long Island is a culinary paradise with diverse dining options. Some local favorites include Skipper’s Pub in Northport for their renowned fish and chips, The Library Café in Farmingdale for burgers and signature martinis, and Cool Water Grill in Bay Shore for a variety of delectable dishes.
