7 Ways Friendships Evolve After Motherhood
When the instruction manual for motherhood starts to feel like a collection of frantic scribbles, my girlfriends are the ones I turn to. I’m fortunate to have a close-knit group of women who have been by my side for years, providing support and laughter through the chaos. However, looking back, it’s almost as if we’ve transformed into a different breed since becoming mothers. Here are several ways our friendships have shifted post-baby:
-
Making New Connections:
Before: Oh my gosh! We’re in the same class! You’re amazing; let’s hang out!
Now: I notice your pants are stained from the knees down, so I’m guessing you have a toddler at home too. Want to come over and watch them duke it out over some measuring cups? -
Exercising Together:
Before: Coffee first, then some cute stretches in our new spandex. We had the energy to conquer mountains, yoga classes, and rock walls—all while gossiping about weddings and dreamy futures.
Now: I roll out of bed before dawn to dodge my little one’s morning routine, often still in my workout clothes from the night before. My friend arrives, and we jog in silence because, let’s face it, breathing and chatting simultaneously is a challenge. -
Phone Conversations:
Before: Hours of uninterrupted chatting about who knows what.
Now: I’m still multitasking during our chats, making sure the kids aren’t getting into trouble, tackling the dishes, and doing laundry—all while discussing life in a newly chaotic way. -
Girls’ Night Out:
Before: Drinks, dancing, and cute outfits were our go-to.
Now: We indulge in fancier drinks, savoring the luxury of just sitting together without kids. A shared look of exhaustion says more than words ever could. -
Couple’s Hangouts:
Before: We danced, made S’mores, and had spontaneous adventures.
Now: We’ve mastered tuning out our little ones while trying to have an adult conversation, all while they create a glittery disaster in the other room. -
Playdates:
Before: Spa days full of relaxation and pampering.
Now: I’m listening to my friend share her birthing stories while making sure our toddlers don’t turn the living room into a battleground. -
Weekend Getaways:
Before: Bikinis, fruity drinks, and late-night chats by the pool.
Now: Huh? We might be lucky to catch a few z’s in between parenting duties.
