In the vibrant city of New York, Jack is a devoted father to his charming young son. Like many others in the bustling metropolis, Jack faced the reality that surrogacy was his only avenue to have a biological child. At the time, however, New York was one of the few states that prohibited surrogacy.
Editor’s note: Since this story was originally shared, we are excited to announce that New York has enacted the Child Parent Security Act, legalizing gestational surrogacy and simplifying the process for parents who use assisted reproduction to build their families.
New Beginnings
In a newly released video supported by the Ric Swezey Memorial Fund, Jack recounts his experience of forming a family. Hailing from Kansas, Jack left behind the conservative beliefs of the Bible Belt and discovered a land of freedom and opportunity in New York City. However, his aspirations to start a family came with its share of challenges, even in such a progressive state.
Jack’s journey mirrors the often complex path that many LGBTQ+ individuals traverse on their way to parenthood. He expresses, “When LGBTQ individuals decide to start a family, it requires extensive planning and a deep commitment. It’s a challenging journey that demands a lot of effort.”
Transforming Dreams into Reality
Growing up in Kansas, Jack was embraced by a large, loving family. His strong bond with his grandmother and mother instilled in him a profound appreciation for family. Yet, it took time for Jack to come to terms with his desire to have children.
“It was a journey to gain acceptance from my family regarding my sexuality, but eventually, they came around,” Jack reflects. “There was a period when I thought being gay meant I wouldn’t be able to have a family.”
Despite being single, Jack always envisioned a family in his future.
“I grew up seeing single-parent families, and I thought if it was possible for heterosexual parents, then I could find the resources to begin my own family journey. So, as a single man, I resolved to pursue parenthood.”
A Collective Effort
Although Jack is a single father, his journey was anything but solitary. Through meaningful connections with friends, he found an egg donor named Sarah and a gestational surrogate, Emily, who also had roots in Kansas. Their bond is beautifully highlighted in Jack’s son, Mia’s life.
“To say I have a village is an understatement,” Jack remarked.
