There’s something special about a night out with the girls. Whether it’s reminiscing over popcorn at a slumber party or watching our mothers shine at bingo night, these gatherings have always held a cherished place in our hearts. Recently, I’ve realized that while my enthusiasm for ladies’ night remains, the way I prepare for these precious outings has evolved significantly since welcoming my two little ones.

Getting Ready: Pre-Children

  1. Crank up my favorite playlist to set the mood.
  2. Pour a generous glass of wine to sip on as I prep.
  3. Explore my wardrobe, contemplating my outfit options.
  4. Enjoy a tranquil shower, taking the time to exfoliate and pamper myself.
  5. Moisturize my legs, apply make-up, and style my hair with care.
  6. Refill my wine glass and turn the music up a notch.
  7. Touch base with my friends about their plans and outfits.
  8. Return to my closet to select the ideal ensemble, shoes, and accessories.
  9. If I haven’t treated myself to a mani/pedi, I’ll paint my nails.
  10. Finish my wine while grooving to my playlist and waiting for the polish to dry.
  11. Call a taxi while I catch up on emails.
  12. Grab my keys and step out, feeling fabulous.

Ah, the luxury of that pre-girls’ night routine! Who wouldn’t want to stay in after such a delightful evening at home?

Getting Ready: Post-Children

  1. Search for the remote to snag a few quiet moments while I prepare.
  2. Serve the kids a quick snack.
  3. Frantically hunt for an outfit that fits and isn’t maternity wear.
  4. Forget about showering—dry shampoo and deodorant will have to do!
  5. Apply some mascara and cover those pesky blemishes.
  6. Start dinner while anxiously wondering when my partner will return home.
  7. Call to nudge my partner to hurry home.
  8. Feed the kids and tag-team with my partner as they walk in the door—I’m officially off duty!
  9. Rush to paint my nails, hoping no one notices the mess.
  10. Realize I’m still on duty because I’m still in the house. Time to handle pajamas, teeth brushing, and bottles.
  11. Get hugs goodbye, which results in a little snot on my skirt and smudged polish.
  12. Make a break for the door, glancing back to blow a kiss to those little faces pressed against the window.

It’s a whirlwind, but the joy of those evenings with friends makes it worthwhile.
