Parenting Indulgence
She’s excited because helping me means she gets to enjoy some extra screen time. I get a helping hand, and everyone benefits! Last night, we watched the “Pawnee Rangers” episode from Parks and Recreation, where Tom and Donna celebrate their annual “Indulge in Self-Care” day. They spend the entire day pampering themselves.
Surprisingly, mastering the art of self-care is a genuine skill. As they prepare for their fun-filled adventure, Donna suggests inviting their coworker and friend, Max, to join in. “He really seems like he could use a break. He’s like a rubber band stretched to its limit,” she observes. And she’s right: individuals who forgo self-care for too long often become irritable and worn out.
Tom, however, disagrees, saying, “There’s no way Max can slow down enough to keep up with us.” While Tom and Donna’s self-indulgence includes extravagant purchases, it’s essential to remember that true joy in self-care doesn’t always come from spending money. As we see throughout the episode, their “Indulge in Self-Care” day is about friendship and shared experiences. “It’s the best day of the year!” Donna exclaims. They cherish their time together and their little rituals, proving that the moments spent together far outweigh the material treats they indulge in.
I would love to organize an “Indulge in Self-Care” day with a friend, filled with wholesome treats and activities, all in one delightful package. In fact, when it comes to maintaining healthy habits, the practice of self-care serves as a crucial strategy. By allowing ourselves small indulgences, we are better equipped to meet our commitments. After enjoying a fun outing with a friend, I find it easier to stick to my exercise routine.
When we feel deprived of treats, we can fall into the trap of rationalizing unhealthy choices with phrases like “I’ve earned this” or “I need this.” These justifications can lead to breaking good habits, but by incorporating healthy self-care into our lives, we eliminate those excuses.
I delve into the fascinating practice of self-care and the common pitfalls of justifying bad habits in my latest book, Living Better Than Before, which explores how we create and break habits. In summary, taking a day to pamper yourself, while keeping it balanced, can strengthen your ability to maintain healthy habits and foster meaningful connections with friends.
