While the term “treats” might seem like a luxury or an unnecessary indulgence, it actually serves a significant purpose. The process of establishing good habits can be exhausting, and incorporating treats can be a vital part of that journey. When we allow ourselves little rewards, we feel rejuvenated, valued, and satisfied, which in turn enhances our self-discipline. This self-discipline is crucial for sustaining our healthy habits.
Research indicates that even small treats—like an unexpected gift or a humorous video—can improve self-control. It’s one of life’s little truths: by treating ourselves kindly, we can hold ourselves to higher standards. Valuing ourselves isn’t selfish; it’s essential.
On the flip side, when we deny ourselves any treats, we risk feeling burnt out, worn out, and resentful. Recently, I was chatting with my friend Tom, who remarked, “I don’t treat myself at all.” This statement sparked a couple of thoughts. First, it’s concerning that he identifies as someone who doesn’t indulge in treats. While it might seem noble to forgo self-care, I believe it could lead to negative habits.
Even simple joys, like a cup of herbal tea or a fresh set of markers, can be considered treats. Without these small pleasures, we can easily fall into a mindset of deprivation, which is detrimental to maintaining good habits. Feeling deprived often leads us to rationalize breaking our routines with thoughts like, “I’ve earned this” or “I deserve a break.”
Secondly, I suspected that Tom did treat himself; he just didn’t recognize those moments as treats. After a brief discussion, he realized that he buys new music every week, which is indeed a treat. To truly appreciate something as a treat, we must consciously acknowledge it as such. When we savor our pleasures, those moments transform into genuine treats. For instance, once I discovered my love for delightful scents, a whole array of new treats became available to me.
It’s beneficial for all of us to cultivate a diverse selection of healthy treats, allowing us to recharge in positive ways. Sometimes, what appears to be a chore can actually be a treat.
