7 Transformations in Friendships After Becoming a Mother
When my parenting guide starts resembling a jumbled mess of thoughts scrawled on a restroom wall, my friends are my go-to support system. I’m grateful to have a circle of longtime friends who can help me navigate this wild journey. Looking back, it’s hard to believe how much we’ve changed since becoming mothers. Here are several ways friendships evolve after entering motherhood:
1. Making New Friends:
Before: “Oh wow! We’re in the same class! You seem awesome, let’s grab coffee!”
Now: “I see those stains on your pants that suggest you have a tiny tornado at home. Same here! Want to come over and watch them play tug-of-war with measuring cups?”
2. Exercising Together:
Before: Morning coffee followed by a yoga class in cute workout gear, fueled by endless energy as we chat about life’s latest happenings.
Now: Rolling out of bed before sunrise to dodge my daughter’s morning routine, sometimes still in my pajamas. Realizing my shoes have holes but deciding they can wait a few months. My friend arrives, and we focus on just breathing rather than chatting while jogging.
3. Phone Conversations:
Before: Endless hours of uninterrupted conversations about everything and nothing.
Now: Juggling the phone while ensuring the kids aren’t consuming anything dangerous, tackling laundry, and crafting a DIY project. Multitasking has reached a new level!
4. Girls’ Night Out:
Before: Drinks, dancing, and late-night adventures, dressed to impress.
Now: Sipping on fancier cocktails, simply enjoying the rare chance to sit with friends who understand the struggles of motherhood. A knowing glance is often all it takes to communicate.
5. Couples’ Night:
Before: Fun activities that included dancing and spontaneous adventures.
Now: Mastering the art of distraction as we try to engage in adult conversation while our little ones create havoc. The wine and food, however, have significantly improved.
6. “Play” Dates:
Before: Luxurious spa treatments followed by hours of relaxation and girl talk.
Now: Trying to listen to a friend share her birthing experience while keeping the kids from turning the living room into a wrestling ring.
7. Weekend Getaways:
Before: Poolside lounging in bikinis, fruity drinks in hand, and late-night chats.
Now: Huh? Did we actually plan a trip?
