5 Back-to-School Resolutions I’m Embracing

As the back-to-school season approaches, I find myself reflecting on the fresh start it brings, almost like New Year’s Day. Like many parents, I often set the same goals: punctuality, no lost permission slips, and packing lunches the night before (yeah right!). This year, however, I’m introducing some new resolutions, and with a little wisdom under my belt, I’m ready to tackle them head-on.

  1. Embrace the Power of ‘No’

Having had children in school for over a decade, I’ve shed my past eagerness to volunteer for every event. The days of being the enthusiastic kindergarten mom are long gone. Now, I find camaraderie with fellow parents who understand the exhaustion of it all. We’ve learned that it’s perfectly acceptable to say “No” without guilt. So, dear younger parents, feel free to host all the class parties; I’ll be busy enjoying my yoga classes instead.

  2. Let the Kids Handle Mornings

I know this may sound ambitious, but I’m determined to step back and allow my kids to manage their own morning routines. Yes, it’s a daunting thought, considering I usually handle everything from breakfast to backpacks. But I’m going to trust that they can rise, prepare themselves, and get ready for school without my frantic supervision. Here’s to hoping we can maintain this system at least until Halloween!

  3. Support Their Dreams, Not Mine

As my oldest approaches the end of high school, I realize I need to let him explore his own interests rather than imposing my dreams on him. He may not take the exact path I envisioned, like skipping AP Calculus or the Engineering Honor Society, but that’s okay. He’s discovering his passions, and if he wants to be a teacher with a love for English, then so be it. It’s time for me to step back and allow him to chart his own course.

  4. No More Project Assistance

I’ve become an expert at spotting parent-made projects from a mile away. With four kids, I simply don’t have the time or energy to swoop in and save the day when a project is due. So, if a science fair project is due tomorrow, my response will likely be, “Sorry, buddy, it sounds like you’re on your own.” Better to let them learn from their own experiences than to pave the way for easier paths down the line.

  5. Cherish My Youngest’s School Journey

While I might feel “over it” as a school mom, I don’t want my youngest to feel that way. As the fourth child, he often gets the short end of the stick—his baby book is nonexistent, and he’s always in hand-me-downs. I vow to embrace his school experiences with the same enthusiasm I had for his older siblings. Whether it’s dressing up for “Dress Like a Saint Day” or cheering him on during the school play, I will be present and engaged. After all, he deserves to have the same joyful memories as his siblings.

In conclusion, these resolutions are a blend of letting go and embracing new beginnings as we step into the school year. Each of them is a reminder for me to focus not just on my expectations but also on the unique journeys my children are on.
