There’s a notion that convenience leaves us paralyzed; the sheer abundance of choices can overwhelm us to the point where we struggle to make decisions. While I do agree with this sentiment, I believe it’s not just this particular truth that leads us to trade our first meditation session for a binge-watch of Season One of a favorite series. It’s far too simple to stay put, to choose the comfort of our home rather than venture out, and it’s even easier to remain stagnant emotionally. Most people understand that many of our long-standing issues stem from unconscious beliefs, and opting to remain where we are when we wish to progress is simply yielding to our internal resistance.

I contend that maintaining our health is challenging because we have an unconscious investment in staying stuck in our old selves, clinging to the identities we’ve always known: the weak one, the outsider, the broken one. We often recycle outdated narratives and cling to ways of thinking that bring us comfort, developed during our formative years. When we don’t actively challenge these views, we inevitably revert to them. Each time we choose inaction over action when we know we ought to do something different, we’re defaulting to those old beliefs about who we think we are.

In my childhood, my stepfather, Larry, was fascinated by gadgets and technology. He outfitted our house with an intercom system on every phone, often “accidentally” eavesdropping on our private conversations. The basement became a treasure trove of wires, antennas, and spare parts he might need someday, alongside batteries and video cameras. One night, he excitedly introduced a Betamax VCR to our home while everyone else was flocking to buy VHS players.

“This,” he proclaimed, “is the future.”

But it wasn’t the future. It quickly became obsolete, fading from our memories as if it never existed. The unconscious images we hold of ourselves, the ones we don’t even realize are guiding our choices, are like that Betamax. We can continue to use them to project our narratives, but investing in the future means letting go of those outdated models.

This is a reminder that it’s essential to challenge our past beliefs and recognize that we have the power to redefine ourselves. In summary, it’s vital to recognize the unconscious narratives we cling to that keep us from moving forward in our lives. By challenging these beliefs, we can embrace new identities and paths, ultimately leading to healthier choices and a brighter future.
