In crafting The Girl’s Guide to Absolutely Everything (Workman, new edition 2015), I interviewed countless women to uncover the wisdom they wish they’d had upon graduating college—wisdom that could have alleviated their struggles and smoothed their journey through their 20s and 30s. Here’s a snippet from one of those conversations.

What do you wish you’d known sooner?

I’ve learned that not every situation deserves a reaction, that love doesn’t always equate readiness, and that learning to embrace loneliness is crucial without spiraling into despair.

As you navigate through life, you’ll encounter people who are truly amazing, but you’ll also meet those who simply aren’t the right fit for you. It’s perfectly okay to step away from those who drain your energy; it often takes a great deal of courage to do so.

However, there are also those who will be your steadfast allies—the ones who accept you without wanting you to morph into someone else. They’ll stand by you through your highs, lows, and all the messy moments in between. If you haven’t met them yet, don’t lose hope; they are out there, and they will cross your path eventually.

In the interim, hold your ground, don’t settle, and please, stop apologizing so much.

Remember, as noted by Lisa Hartman, “you’re not doomed to be alone and without purpose.”
