5 Resolutions I’m Making for the Holiday Season

5 Resolutions I'm Making for the Holiday Seasonself insemination kit

For many years, I’ve held onto a well-loved issue of a popular lifestyle magazine that’s filled with intricate holiday crafts and gourmet recipes. Every year, I promise myself that this will be the year I finally bring those stunning visions to life. Armed with a glass of wine, I flip through the pages, feeling inspired yet overwhelmed by the beautiful projects and elaborate menus that seem far beyond my reach.

This ritual of browsing often leads to a wave of guilt as I find myself comparing my modest efforts to those glamorous creations. My self-criticism doesn’t just stop at the kitchen; it extends to my half-hearted decorations, haphazard party planning, and the lengthy gift lists that start as ambitious DIY endeavors but quickly devolve into frantic last-minute shopping.

But this year, I’m determined to tackle the holiday season without the weight of guilt. Here are five promises I’m making to myself:

  1. I promise to resist doorbuster madness. No more waking up at dawn for Black Friday sales or braving the cold for those early-morning deals. I will not chase after coupons or scour newspapers for savings that make me feel like I need to be a financial planner instead of a parent simply looking for a festive gift for my child.
  2. I promise to involve my kids in the fun. Regardless of the mess or chaos that may ensue, I will embrace my children’s enthusiastic participation in holiday crafts. Whether the wreath turns out wonky or the Christmas tree is sparsely decorated, I will cherish the moments spent together, even if it means Santa gets an assortment of haphazardly frosted cookies.
  3. I promise to take time to savor the season. When classic holiday films air, I won’t get distracted by chores like making popcorn garlands or sorting through holiday cards. Instead, I’ll join my kids in making snow angels and indulge in spiked eggnog while sharing stories. I want to fully enjoy the little moments, like snacking on assorted nuts and chocolate kisses while lounging with my family.
  4. I promise to avoid overwhelming DIY projects. Although creating homemade gifts can be enjoyable, I will recognize when the fun turns into stress. If my list of projects starts feeling burdensome, I’ll set it aside. This holiday season is not meant to be a test of my endurance!
  5. I promise not to start planning my post-holiday diet too soon. I refuse to let that nagging voice dictate what I can and cannot enjoy at holiday gatherings. This year, I will savor every delicious bite, from bacon-wrapped scallops to mouthwatering desserts, without guilt.

Last year, I tried to emulate that magazine’s perfection, and it left me feeling frazzled and unhappy. This year is about creating joy and magic in our own unique way. Cheers to a holiday season filled with laughter and love!
