5:30 AM – Rise and shine! I set my alarm early to give myself a fighting chance at some peace before the chaos begins.

5:31 AM – I contemplate making a soothing cup of tea to savor during my brief moment of solitude. Quietly, I tiptoe downstairs, trying to avoid waking anyone.

5:31 AM – My toddler, who seems to possess the hearing abilities of an owl, instantly senses my movements. It’s like I’m a burglar sneaking around in the dark, guided only by the light of my phone.

5:32 AM – I freeze in place, hoping she might drift back into slumber.

5:33 AM – No luck. “Mama! Wake!” she chirps, bright-eyed despite the late-night binky search that kept us all awake. I can’t help but worry that her happiness might come back to haunt me later.

5:33 AM – I spend the next few minutes assisting her on and off the potty, feeling a twinge of guilt for the chilly seat she must endure due to my husband’s frigid sleep temperature preferences.

5:34 AM – That guilt quickly fades as her sunny disposition starts to sour, frustrated by her inability to wash her hands for the umpteenth time.

6:15 AM – Time to wake my older child! I’m grateful for the one family member who greets the morning with a smile. I remind myself to spread kindness today to ensure he remains this cheerful through his teenage years.

7:00 AM – In a flurry, I manage to get everyone fed, hydrated, and packed for the day—everyone except me. But hey, I did manage to brew that tea… so small victories!

7:30 AM – Oh no! I completely overlooked the Pull-Up Character Negotiations.

7:35 AM – Just five minutes before the bus is due, my older child remembers a laundry list of important school items: a form to sign and pay for, a library book to locate, a helmet for rollerblading, and a birthday surprise for his teacher.

7:40 AM – With the speed of a superhero, I gather everything he needs, signing papers and rushing around. Luckily, his dad (who may or may not have just rolled out of bed) lends a hand, and he makes it out the door.

7:45 AM – Now comes the delicate task of explaining to the toddler that her Dad will take her to her babysitter today. She responds with an enthusiastic “Okay!” which makes me worry she doesn’t fully grasp the change.

7:50 AM – Outside, I go to warm up the car. In her frantic need to be near me, my toddler fiddles with the doorknob and locks me out. Yes, really.

7:51 AM – I attempt to communicate with her through the door about how to unlock it. But, given that she didn’t understand when I said, “Daddy is taking you today,” my panic level spikes. Thankfully, I remember I let the dog out upstairs! Fingers crossed.

7:52 AM – Miraculously, I get back inside. Phew! That could’ve been an awkward conversation with a neighbor.

7:55 AM – I give my toddler a hug goodbye (freedom is almost here!). She’s somehow managed to put on her coat and backpack, confirming my suspicion that she’s not quite grasping the situation. She hugs me and says “Bye, Mommy!” But then, as I open the door to leave, she realizes what’s happening.

7:57 AM – Cue the dramatic meltdown. I escape just in time.

8:00 AM – I drive down the driveway, my once-hot tea now lukewarm, but hey, it’s in my hand, and that makes this morning a win!
