Check out that fabulous older woman strutting in stilettos through the snow!

On a rather gloomy day, the East Coast was hit with a winter storm that left many of us scrambling. Despite the weather forecasters’ warnings, most of us emerged into a world filled with treacherous puddles and chaotic umbrella skirmishes. Buses, furious at the icy conditions, splashed slush everywhere, adding to the mayhem. We all resembled disgruntled winter creatures.

I thought I was prepared for this frigid morning in New York City. I squeezed my large feet into the warmest, waterproof boots I could find, layered myself like a burrito, and donned a hat to cover my hair. After venting to my partner for a good half-hour, I finally stepped out, ready to conquer the city. (Bring it on, New York!)

And then there you were, gliding across Sixth Avenue like a graceful urban gazelle. You wore impossibly slender stilettos that must have been at least four inches high. Sure, you faced your fair share of challenges crossing the street, yet you managed it all with a radiant smile and remarkable balance. Dressed in your chic, all-black outfit, you looked like you were born to walk that avenue today. Your elegance amidst the chaos made me question my own life choices.

To top it off, you appeared to be older than I am, your silver hair shining proudly—a vision of how I aspire to embrace aging. It flowed effortlessly as you moved, radiating confidence.

In my mind, I pictured your image paired with catchy slogans like, “Don’t let New York drag you down!” or “Timeless style, forever Manhattan!” Meanwhile, here I was, a much younger version of myself, resembling an ad for struggling in life, sponsored by REI and despair.

I can’t even manage to wear stilettos on a clear day without ending up on the ground or suffering through painful blisters. So, watching you with awe was a challenge in itself. I wished I could’ve stopped you to ask if you offer classes on how to be so effortlessly cool. I could certainly use some tips!

But I didn’t want to interrupt your fabulous day, so I made a mental note to pay homage to you once I got to my computer. I hope you see this, though I suspect you’re far too chic for the online world. Your smile while navigating the slushy streets was the only glimmer of brightness I encountered today. Keep strutting, my mysterious friend. I salute you from the depths of my cold, winter-weary heart.
