20 Insights Gained From My Second Child

There’s no life transition quite like becoming a mother for the first time. With my first little one, I felt like every day was filled with new discoveries and surprises. Yet, when I found out I was expecting again, I thought I had it all figured out! While that was true to an extent—my worries were less intense—I quickly realized that my second son was a unique individual, and I still had much to learn. Here’s what I discovered with my second child:

  1. Just because your first pregnancy went one way doesn’t mean the second will follow suit.
  2. Babies can be surprisingly resilient; they adapt easily to being carried in all sorts of ways, even like a football.
  3. You may fret over how your firstborn will adjust to no longer being the sole focus of attention, but trust me, they’ll adapt just fine.
  4. Even a young baby knows how to throw a tantrum, especially when it comes to competing with an older sibling.
  5. A handful of stained onesies can form a baby’s entire clothing collection.
  6. Bed rest may seem daunting, but you’ll get through it, even if you think you won’t.
  7. Your body may take longer to recover after the second baby (if it did at all the first time).
  8. Believe it or not, you can feel more exhausted than you ever imagined possible.
  9. Shoes? Not a necessity for babies.
  10. Even if you follow the same parenting strategies, your second child may turn out entirely different from the first.
  11. One child? Piece of cake—now you know better!
  12. “Me” time? Forget it; you’re operating under a new system of man-to-man coverage.
  13. You might have claimed you weren’t a yeller, but guess what? You are now!
  14. Contrary to what I believed, my singing voice isn’t unbearable.
  15. Some kids just aren’t interested in TV, no matter how much you try to engage them.
  16. Sometimes, the closest thing to a break is lying on the floor while your kids straddle you yelling “Yeehaw!”
  17. Child-proofing your home? It’s not as foolproof as you might think.
  18. A small child can climb furniture faster than you can wipe your nose.
  19. If the older sibling finds something funny, the younger one will repeat it ad infinitum—good behavior? Not so much!
  20. Your heart has infinite space to love another child as deeply as you loved the first.
