In a recent conversation with contributor Sarah Lane, actress Juliana Sparks, 54, opened up about her experiences as a working mother, facing rejection, and the values she holds dear in life.
Was it challenging to transition from such a demanding role once filming wrapped?
Surprisingly, it filled me with gratitude. Leaving the set was a relief, as I returned to my wonderful family. I felt fortunate to have what I truly desire—a strong relationship with my husband and happy children. This film really prompted me to reflect on what matters most. Ultimately, it’s about the connections we cultivate. I cherish the moments of saying, “I want to be with you, and I love you.”
What are your thoughts on the early Oscar buzz surrounding your performance?
I embrace it with immense gratitude, especially considering the multitude of films and exceptional performances out there. Hearing positive feedback about my work is incredibly moving, especially from my peers. I don’t take it lightly at all.
Did you always know you wanted to pursue acting?
My parents didn’t initially envision me as an actress. However, they always encouraged us to chase our dreams. When I expressed my desire to act, they jokingly responded, “That wasn’t what we meant!” But deep down, they instilled in me the belief that I could pursue whatever path I chose.
How do you juggle your career and motherhood?
Being a mother comes with immense love and responsibility, which often overshadows everything else. I believe it’s my duty to ensure my children are happy, educated, and safe, providing them with every opportunity possible. Every mother shares this sentiment. I genuinely hope I’m doing well in that role. My kids seem happy and are thriving, which is a blessing. I feel fortunate that my life allows me to explore various emotional experiences through my work, enabling me to maintain balance and navigate different aspects of my life. I consider myself lucky.
What principles guide you?
I often receive labels like “brave” and “fearless” for my work, but I don’t see myself as fearless. Acting doesn’t intimidate me; it excites me and brings joy. To me, real fear is bungee jumping or speeding on a motorboat—those are terrifying experiences! I’ve faced rejection for being too attractive or not attractive enough; it’s all relative. Fortunately, the industry doesn’t shake my confidence. At 54, I feel content with where I am in my life.
