A Fond Farewell from Young Spock to Old Spock
Dear Leonard,
While our bond through our beloved Vulcan character is eternal, I must admit we haven’t crossed paths often—perhaps only three or four times at most. This makes it a bit awkward for me to reach out, as our interactions have been brief and somewhat limited. I can only imagine how many heartfelt stories your close friends and family could share about you. Nevertheless, the enduring nature of film, capturing moments that resonate with audiences across generations, indeed intertwines our lives.
This connection may not reveal our true selves, but as actors portraying Spock, we are linked together in this remarkable journey that will continue until the day Spock is no longer remembered. I hold onto the hope that this iconic figure—an embodiment of human logic and reason to whom we have dedicated a piece of ourselves—will endure for many centuries.
If memory serves me right, our first meeting took place at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, back in the summer of 2009. I was just 14. Before taking the stage with Zach Quinto, we encountered each other backstage. While the words exchanged have faded from my mind, your kindness and humility left a lasting impression. It felt like meeting a friendly uncle or a wise grandfather. Everything I had heard about you spoke of your grounded nature, and it was refreshing to witness that stardom hadn’t overshadowed your fundamental goodness.
Though I can’t recall the specifics of our conversation, I believe that words often serve merely as vessels for the emotions shared between individuals, and I’m sure your sentiments were nothing but warm and welcoming.
When we finally took the stage with the wonderful Zachary Quinto, we stood before a captivated audience of Trekkies. There’s a video of that moment on YouTube, should you wish to revisit it. It remains one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. On that stage, we were not just three individuals struggling to find the right words; we represented a saga that has carved its place in cultural history and the legacy of Spock, along with the joy and inspiration our character has brought to countless lives.
At one point, you humorously remarked on my enthusiastic attempts to appear charming: “He’s not at all like he is in the movie, is he? He’s like, ya know, ‘hey, hey!’” That may well have been the most spot-on analysis I’ve ever received! You embraced Zach, wished us well, and turned to the audience with a smile, saying, “Isn’t that great?” It truly was greater than I could ever articulate.
