Dear Fellow Parents, Grandparents, Friends, Family, Grocery Store Clerks, and Tech Support,
If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m the proud mother of two energetic boys. Aside from me and a feisty little dog, our household is all about the boys. While I may have once envisioned a family filled with hair bows and twirling skirts, I wouldn’t trade my boys for anything. They fill my life with joy, laughter, and a bit of chaos.
However, I have to admit that some comments directed toward my sons can be a bit disheartening. I know your intentions are often good, like asking if we’re hoping for a girl (which we aren’t; we’re thrilled with our boys) or assuming that having boys means we’re free of drama and sensitivity (believe me, there’s plenty of eye-rolling, door-slamming, and dramatic outbursts in our home).
I understand that some remarks are just small talk, such as inquiring about my son’s sports interests. Others might be intended as compliments, like when you say, “Wow, you really have your hands full!” (Trust me, I do, and I cherish every moment of it.)
Instead of dwelling on the comments that can sting, let’s focus on what we truly want to hear. There’s really just one key phrase that resonates with all moms of boys—and honestly, it’s something every parent longs to hear. We often have days where we feel overwhelmed, exhausted by the noise and antics, and questioning our parenting skills.
At the core, we simply want to ensure our boys grow up to be strong, sensitive, confident, curious, loving, and kind. We are eager to nurture them into wonderful men. What we need most is reassurance that we’re on the right path and that we’re not alone in this journey of parenthood.
So, what should you say to a mom of boys?
It’s quite straightforward: Flash a smile, ask how she’s doing, and regardless of her answer, offer this comforting line: “You’re doing a fantastic job. Those boys are lucky to have you.”
You’ll likely see her smile widen as she responds with a grateful “thank you.” She might even blush or brush off your compliment, or perhaps she’ll just give you a warm hug. Because that simple gesture can truly make her day brighter.
Warmly,
A Mom of Boys

In summary, as a mother to boys, the most cherished words are those that affirm our efforts and recognize the love we pour into our families. A simple acknowledgment can go a long way in brightening our challenging days.
