Michael Lawrence stars as a ruthless executive in the indie thriller, Beyond the Reach, which hits theaters on April 17. While he embraces his villainous roles on screen, the Oscar and Emmy-winning actor prioritizes his family in real life, embodying a much softer persona.

Having triumphed over throat cancer and reconciled with his wife, Lisa Zenn, after a public separation, Michael now focuses on their two children, son Jason and daughter Anna. He’s also advocating for his eldest son, Tyler, from his first marriage to Rebecca, who is currently serving a lengthy sentence for drug-related offenses.

At 70, Michael sat down with Home Insemination Kit’s Jeanne Wells to discuss the importance of family, love, and his newfound outlook on life.

Do you think taking on independent films contributes to your youthful perspective?

Definitely. After overcoming cancer, I’ve experienced a renaissance in my life. I find projects like Beyond the Reach thrilling because they push me to my limits, reminiscent of my early days in independent cinema, back to films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It’s a refreshing challenge that invigorates my spirit.

Was balancing your career and parenthood tough in your early stardom?

Absolutely! Early on, I was so focused on my career that I didn’t prioritize being a parent as I should have. I believe my eldest son, Tyler, missed out on certain things that my younger children, Jason and Anna, now enjoy. It’s rewarding to see more individuals waiting longer to have kids so they can dedicate themselves fully to parenting without the added pressure of building a career simultaneously.

Speaking of Tyler, you’ve been a steadfast supporter during his time in prison. How is he coping?

He’s managing as best as he can, but it’s a difficult situation for him, especially as a non-violent drug offender. He’s been incarcerated for over six years now, and while I worry about him, he has shown resilience. I recently visited him, and I’m hopeful that next year will bring positive changes for him.

You have a teenager at home again! What’s that like?

Oh boy, it’s a trip! My son Jason is 14, and it’s a reminder of how they often think they know everything. Someone suggested I take a break from trying to connect until he’s older—maybe then he’ll realize how much I’ve learned in the meantime!

You and Lisa are back together. Do you feel your relationship has strengthened post-separation?

Absolutely. Every relationship encounters its share of challenges, and I’m proud of how Lisa and I have navigated through ours. Our bond today is deeper and filled with more love than ever before. Sometimes, perseverance is key to working things out.

Do the highs and lows you’ve faced in recent years make you more grateful?

Yes, definitely. It’s a combination of life’s adversities and the wisdom that comes with age. Balancing the experiences of caring for my elderly father, who’s 98, along with nurturing my young kids and my relationship with Lisa, brings a tremendous sense of fulfillment. I embrace the role of “Mr. Mom” and find it incredibly rewarding.

In summary, Michael Lawrence reflects on the trials and triumphs of life, emphasizing the importance of family and resilience. He appreciates the value of relationships, especially after facing personal challenges, and enjoys the journey of parenthood once again.
