Kelly Johnson Opens Up About Intimacy, Family, and Self-Image
My daughter entered the world in August 2002, coinciding with the debut season of a little show called American Idol. As I reclined in the hospital, munching on ice chips and jokingly regretting our decision to start a family, I suggested to my partner that we name our baby after the contestant who would be voted off that evening. Clever, right?
That night’s unfortunate elimination was Christina Christian—which posed a bit of a problem since we celebrate Jewish traditions. But had a certain talented 20-year-old from Fort Worth, Texas had a less mesmerizing voice, I might be calling my kid Kelly Johnson instead.
This reflection popped into my mind when I saw that the fabulous Kelly Clarkson graced the cover of Redbook’s May issue alongside her daughter, River Rose. In case you’re curious, the name River was inspired by the natural beauty nearby, and Kelly loves the ring of alliteration.
Much of the excitement surrounding Kelly’s magazine feature stems from her strong stance against body shaming (think along the lines of Pink and Bethenny Frankel), and her candid comments on intimacy with her husband. “I’ve always said our relationship wouldn’t require scheduling sex,” she shared with Redbook. “We prioritize each other. It’s like the oxygen-mask philosophy—take care of yourself first!” Sure, that’s what we all think! Let’s check back in six months, shall we?
Kelly is a true champion when it comes to silencing online critics who try to make her feel insecure about her body. “I don’t fixate on my weight, which is likely why it bothers others so much,” she explained. “Some people are just naturally slim with fast metabolisms—that’s not my case.” While she occasionally wishes for a more forgiving metabolism, Kelly wisely recognizes that everyone has their own struggles. “Someone else might envy my ability to walk into a room and instantly connect with people,” she adds. “We always desire what others possess.”
Just like a phenomenal singing voice, for instance.
