California is grappling with a significant drought, and actor William Shatner is eager to play a role in addressing the crisis. In a recent chat with a media outlet, Shatner proposed an ambitious idea: launching a $30 billion campaign on Kickstarter to construct a water pipeline throughout California. Although he admits that many specifics are still up in the air, his passion for the project is evident.
“California has been enduring a drought for four years,” he shared. “They say there’s only a year’s worth of water left. If we don’t see rain next year, what happens to the 20 million residents in the agricultural heartland of America? With California’s economy ranking fifth globally, we’re on the brink of becoming a desert! What’s the solution?”
He highlighted that a pipeline was successfully built in Alaska, so why not along Highway 5? “Imagine a large, four-foot pipeline above ground. If it leaks, you’re irrigating!” he exclaimed.
While this pipeline might seem like a far-fetched fantasy, Shatner’s goal is to amplify awareness about the seriousness of the drought. He has expressed his willingness to take any funds raised to a politician who could help make this vision a reality. However, experts are skeptical about both the feasibility of the plan and the potential for Kickstarter to host a project of such a massive scale.
Shatner, now 84, has faced numerous challenges throughout his life, including a tough period in the 1970s after “Star Trek” when he lost his home and lived in a camper. Today, he is enjoying a thriving career, frequently appearing on television, benefiting financially from his investments, and maintaining a robust social media presence with millions of followers.
Could his influence be enough to turn this water pipeline into reality? He suggested sourcing water from Seattle, but local water resources manager, Jack Thompson, noted that there is no surplus to share. Unfortunately, the skeptics may be onto something.
Although he may not have all the details ironed out, this wouldn’t be the first time Captain Kirk concocted a last-minute plan to save the universe, so who knows what could happen?
