Welcome to my TV paradise! With just a swipe, I can access almost any show I desire. It’s a remarkable time to be a viewer, and I’m continually discovering new ways to enjoy my screen time. Here are my three favorite approaches:
1. Binge-Watching
Ah, binge-watching—the art of diving into multiple hours of a single series in one glorious marathon. Whether you’re exploring a new favorite, revisiting an old classic, or catching up before the next season drops, binge-watching provides endless joy. I’ve indulged in this with shows like Gilmore Girls, Parenthood, and even Twin Peaks. Some series I’ve watched more than once! If only I had tackled Lost this way; alas, revisiting that one feels a bit daunting.
2. Purge-Watching
This concept is relatively new to me! I stumbled upon the term while reading an article that compared it to the poker strategy of being “pot-committed”—you’ve invested so much time that you feel compelled to keep watching. My first experience with purge-watching was with Star Trek: Enterprise, which I found rather disappointing. I was relieved when it was finally canceled, as I could stop watching it after the finale. Recently, I found myself purge-watching The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I adore Tina Fey and loved the premise, but as the show progressed, it began to feel like a lackluster SNL sketch. I continued watching just to say I gave it a fair shot—what a letdown!
3. Hate-Watching
I didn’t realize there was a term for this until I was already knee-deep in it! I once hate-watched The Newsroom, but eventually, it became too much. The blend of clever dialogue and problematic themes wore me down. However, there’s one show I can’t seem to quit: America’s Next Top Model. I began watching for the laughs, like watching models struggle with photoshoots, and somehow I became hooked on Tyra Banks’s outrageous antics. Despite my disdain for many of the contestants, I find myself tuning in to every episode, even as the show has changed over the years. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help myself!
In the end, I embrace all types of viewing experiences—whether it’s binge-watching, purge-watching, or hate-watching, each adds a unique flavor to my viewing routine.
