Today marks Take Our Kids to Work Day, but I decided to send my children off to school and tackle the day solo. Interestingly, the parenting editor at a major publication also opted not to bring her kids along, and her reasoning resonated with me: sometimes, it’s nice to escape the never-ending cycle of shoelace tying, sibling squabbles, and nose wiping. While those tasks are part of the parenting gig, a little time away from them at work can be a refreshing change.
I don’t bring my kids to the office because I doubt they would find any joy in watching me type away on a computer all day, punctuated by brief stretches and bathroom breaks. My work since becoming a parent has involved a lot of emails, meetings, and phone calls—things my kids find tedious even when I’m at home, where at least there are distractions like TiVo and video games.
Some companies I’ve worked with have really gone all out for this special day, but often the activities didn’t really connect with the kids learning about their parents’ jobs. For instance, my partner’s company had the kids in a room where they could play video games, surrounded by programmers and salespeople who spend their day glued to their desks.
So, I chatted with my kids and came up with a list of the seven dream jobs they wish I had on Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day:
- Sanitation Worker
Hands down, the top pick for any child under six. Years ago, while walking my son to preschool, we watched a garbage truck in action. The worker loading the truck joked, “Stay in school, or you’ll end up like me.” I couldn’t help but respond, “Are you kidding? You’ve got the best job ever!” - Advice Columnist
This one came straight from my daughter, who expressed a desire to take my place writing columns that guide people on what to do. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind that gig either! - French Fry Station Attendant at McDonald’s
A classic childhood fantasy. Both of my kids admitted they would love to have this job and join me in the kitchen. - Architect
Not the meetings part, though! They’re interested in the fun stuff—drawing blueprints and constructing mini models of buildings. My son finds the combination of creativity and math appealing. - Retail Cashier
Those of us who have worked in retail know it’s back-breaking work, but to kids, running a cash register behind the counter looks like a thrilling adventure. - Subway Operator
What could be more exciting than driving massive trains underground all day long? My kids think it sounds like the ultimate job. - Zookeeper
Who wouldn’t want to feed seals and care for animals all day? It’s a dream job for many!

In summary, while Take Our Kids to Work Day may not always mean bringing them along to our actual jobs, it sparks their imaginations about the kinds of careers they admire. From sanitation workers to zookeepers, their dream jobs reflect childhood wonder and curiosity.
