When the evening rolls around and we’re not completely wiped out, my husband and I might find ourselves snuggling in front of the TV. And by “snuggle,” I mean we sit on separate couches, watching a show we both agree on while exchanging significant looks—especially when one of us needs the popcorn bowl. So yes, life is mostly perfect in our household. But you know what makes it even more delightful? Those occasional nights when he heads out for work. That’s right; I even cherish my husband more when he’s not around. Clearly, I’m an exceptional wife!
Interestingly, a recent study published in the journal Social Forces found that wives tend to experience an improved quality of life when their husbands spend more time at work. And as the saying goes, “Happy wife, happy life.” So in the end, it’s a win-win for everyone involved!
Here are five reasons why I enjoy the occasional night without my husband, even though I love him dearly:
- A Solo Bed Experience: Lucy and Ricky had the right idea with their separate beds! No more heavy limbs draped over me, no battling for sheets, and I can set the thermostat to a comfy 69 degrees instead of the usual 67. Those two degrees really do make a difference! Plus, I can finally breathe in fresh air instead of the scent of last week’s takeout. Little things matter, right?
- On-Time Bedtime for the Kids: When it’s just me, “time to wash up” doesn’t turn into “let’s play catch” or “snack time.” It actually means brushing teeth and getting into bed, preferably with a nice book, all by 8:30 p.m. I mean, I still struggle to hit that mark, but at least I’m not fighting against distractions!
- Breakfast for Dinner: Forget elaborate meals! My boys are thrilled with simple breakfasts like eggs and toast or cereal with apples. Easy to prepare, less mess to clean, and it’s always a hit—especially when we finish off with ice cream for dessert. Wheee!
- Binge-Watching My Shows: Unless we’re having one of our “quality” evenings together, our main TV is usually tuned to sports. If I sneak away to watch something more engaging, like a show on Bravo, he inevitably walks in (like he owns the place) and before I know it, I’m stuck with sports again. Not my cup of tea at all!
- Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder: Time apart allows me to appreciate my husband even more when he returns. Oh, the irony of it all!
So, when’s the next business trip, love?
