Last night, my partner departed for a three-day work trip, and I can’t say I enjoy his absence. I miss him, of course, but I also confess that I relish the opportunity for some personal space. Less laundry, fewer grocery trips, and unchallenged access to the TV for indulgent viewing of reality shows like The Real Housewives of New York—you know, without the incessant questioning of my taste. Turns out, I’m not alone in appreciating a bit of distance.

Research from the Family Institute at Northwestern University reveals that couples who spend most of the week apart, typically due to work commitments, report higher levels of happiness and well-being than those who reside together all the time. According to the Boston Globe, these long-distance partners also experience reduced feelings of depression, less fatigue, improved eating habits, and more regular exercise.

What’s the Secret?

As noted by Steve Reynolds, a co-author of the study, these couples often enjoy a balance of independence that allows for uninterrupted sleep, socializing, and fitness routines—key elements for maintaining both mental and physical health. Maybe I should think about sending the kids to their own room tonight, hitting the treadmill, and planning a dinner with friends.

However, while individual well-being may thrive, long-distance couples face their own challenges. Reports indicate they experience heightened stress over personal matters and encounter more conflicts with their partners. Additionally, these couples tend to engage in less intimacy (not a shocker), and they score lower in “relationship maintenance” activities, such as expressing love and sharing responsibilities at home.

“These challenges could contribute to increased stress levels among long-distance partners,” Reynolds commented, expressing a desire to explore future studies aimed at helping these couples navigate their unique issues. As long as that research doesn’t interfere with my favorite show, I’m all for it.
