As I put these thoughts into words, I realize that actions speak louder than words. I hope I have modeled these values well over the past decade, as my son has undoubtedly absorbed many lessons from my behavior. With that in mind, here are ten important insights I wish for him to embrace before he turns ten.
1. Respect Everyone
Regardless of their gender, status, or background, treat all individuals with kindness. Whether it’s your teacher or a stranger on the street, everyone deserves your respect. You do this well already; keep it up!
2. Embrace Physical Activity
It’s perfectly normal to be active and playful. I know I sometimes prefer a quieter environment, but I’m working on allowing you to express your energy. Just remember, while roughhousing can be fun, it’s important to understand the difference between playfulness and violence.
3. Understand Boundaries
When someone says “no,” it means no. Always respect that, no matter the situation.
4. Don’t Hide Your Feelings
Your emotions are powerful, and it’s okay to express them. Feeling deeply—whether it’s joy, sadness, or nostalgia—doesn’t make you weak. In fact, it can make you stronger. This is true for everyone, regardless of gender.
5. Happiness is Personal
You cannot be responsible for anyone else’s happiness—whether it’s me, your father, or your friends. Your job is to take care of yourself and treat others well. What truly matters to me is seeing you thrive and find joy in your own life.
6. Be Present
Life is filled with beautiful moments waiting to be noticed. Recently, you mentioned how things you disliked in the past are now things you wish you could have back. Remember, being aware of your experiences leads to a richer life full of memories.
7. Find What You Love
Explore your interests! There’s a whole world out there for you to discover. Whether it’s sports, music, or coding, I’ll support your passions—just promise me you won’t say you’re bored!
8. Reject Entitlement
I know I can be strict, but one thing I will not tolerate is any sense of entitlement. Remember how fortunate we are and keep that in mind as you navigate the world. Engaging in community service and expressing gratitude can help cultivate awareness and humility.
9. Speak Up
Even if you’re not the one leading, it’s essential to stand up for what’s right. Remember what Martin Luther King Jr. said about the silence of friends being more painful than the words of enemies. Have the courage to challenge what’s wrong, even when it’s tough.
10. Unconditional Love
Mistakes are a part of learning. I will always love you, regardless of your choices, but I hope you learn to accept your mistakes, grow from them, and try again. I strive to model that for you every day.
