Ask the Mom: How Do I Approach My Overweight Teen?

Dear Carla,

My 13-year-old daughter is carrying an extra 10 to 15 pounds, which she’s aware of and feels self-conscious about. Our doctor has touched on it lightly, but without much direction on how to handle it. I want to support her before the situation worsens, yet I’m concerned about exacerbating her worries. With the rise of eating disorders among teens, it’s a delicate balance! Should I consider an external program like Weight Watchers, or is it better to assist her at home? We maintain a healthy diet with minimal junk food, but she struggles with portion sizes and the temptation of indulging with friends, such as finishing off her Easter candy in one go.

Thanks!
