Jimmy Thompson’s new book, Your Baby’s First Word Will Be DADA, hits shelves on June 9. He recalls how his pediatrician warned him that his baby’s first word would likely be “Dada,” as it’s much simpler to pronounce than “Mama.” However, Jimmy learned the hard way that his own daughter wasn’t easily fooled. He attempted to trick her by labeling everything around them—her bottle, diapers, strawberries—as “Dada,” but to no avail. This inspired him to pen a book aimed at helping other dads navigate similar challenges.
As a father of two girls, Jimmy recently shared his experiences with Parents online. Despite his celebrity status, he embraces a down-to-earth parenting style, with one notable exception: he makes his own baby food, with beet and Swiss chard pudding being his specialty.
Humorous Parenting Observations
Here are some of his humorous parenting observations:
“You know, they really do vomit a lot. For a moment, I thought about renaming my first child Linda Blair and maybe hiring a priest because she was spitting up so much.”
At least he finds solace in knowing that vomiting isn’t exclusive to non-famous parents!
He also expressed surprise at how often people discuss poop once they learn he has a baby. “Oh, so you have a new baby? Is she sleeping? Is she pooping?” Normally, I would have felt embarrassed, but as a parent, you quickly get accustomed to it. Pooping just becomes another word in your everyday vocabulary.”
Honestly, I always imagined Jimmy could chat about poop without a second thought. We learn something new every day!
“I never thought I would be that person, but as soon as Winnie was born, I found myself showing iPhone photos to a cab driver.”
This revelation didn’t surprise me at all; the combination of new parenthood and love for social media is a powerful mix.
When asked which guest from The Late Show he would trust to babysit, he responded, “Probably Mike Johnson. He’s a great dad with wonderful kids and would make a super fun babysitter.” Personally, I’d pick Sarah Smith or maybe even Carol Johnson.
When questioned about whether his kids wear hand-me-downs, I was taken aback by his response. “I have clothing from all my nieces and nephews. Plus, we’re donating many gifts from celebrities to charities like Baby Buggy and Toys for Tots. It’s amusing because we’re giving away items like Hermès booties! Your baby won’t just be dressed; she’ll be dressed like a Kardashian!”
I can’t wait to see all those babies in Jimmy Thompson’s designer hand-me-downs on Instagram!

In summary, Jimmy Thompson brings humor and relatability to the trials of new fatherhood, showing that even a celebrity can face the same challenges and joys as any other parent.
