Vacation Mode: When to Save and When to Splurge

Like many families, we eagerly await the summer break from school to embark on our adventures. To clarify, while I am excited to travel with the kids, my partner, left to his own devices, would prefer to skip the journey, particularly if it involves flying. However, I cherish the opportunity to explore new destinations with our children—places that can’t be reached by a simple car ride, although road trips have their charm too.

With all the planning falling on my shoulders, I’ve honed my skills over the years. So when I stumbled upon an article discussing when to save and when to splurge during family vacations, I had to see how I measured up. Spoiler alert: I did quite well! Here are some insights from U.S. News combined with my own experience to help guide your spending decisions.

Accommodations

When it comes to space, we have our challenges. Squeezing our family of four into a cramped hotel room can feel more like purgatory than a getaway. Here’s my advice:

SPLURGE on a hotel suite that offers a separate room for the kids. It’s always worth it. I remember nights spent tiptoeing around while the little ones napped in the main room or worse—giving up bathroom access for hours! Now that they’re older, they still go to bed earlier than we do, and I prefer to keep it that way.

SAVE by opting for an apartment rental instead. Websites like Airbnb, Housetrip, and HomeAway can provide spacious accommodations. We’ve rented fantastic apartments in London and Paris, complete with separate rooms and a kitchen—no hidden fees and plenty of room to breathe. This summer, we’re repeating the experience, securing a three-bedroom house for less than the cost of any hotel room in town.

Breakfast

SAVE by choosing a hotel that includes breakfast. More often than not, the complimentary breakfast is decent enough to start the day, and it’s nice to enjoy that first cup of coffee before heading out.

SPLURGE if you’re in a locale renowned for its culinary delights. For instance, we splurged on breakfast in Paris, savoring croissants and coffee at a charming café. It was pricey, but absolutely worth the experience.

Attractions

SAVE by booking tickets in advance or looking for discounts online. Many cities offer passes for multiple attractions, which can save you a bundle. Additionally, consider free alternatives. For example, in New York City, the Staten Island Ferry provides stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and the skyline—at no cost!

SPLURGE when the family needs a little pampering. During our Paris trip, when the kids were worn out from sightseeing, we opted for a boat tour on the Seine. It allowed us to enjoy the city without overexerting them.

Travel

SAVE wherever possible. With skyrocketing airfare, avoid pricey seats and early boarding fees. Save your funds for experiences once you arrive at your destination.

Food

SAVE on lunch. Kids often don’t need formal dining; instead, grab some sandwiches and have a picnic in a park.

SPLURGE on one memorable meal that your children will cherish. In London, we treated ourselves to high tea, an experience my son has since recreated at home with his friends—definitely a lasting memory!

Lastly, here’s a tip not related to finances: My father always emphasized the importance of an afternoon break. Regardless of your children’s age—be it 2, 12, or even 20—taking a midday rest is vital. Return to your accommodation, unwind, and recharge for the rest of the day. Trust me, this advice is golden, and even my kids agree!

In summary, navigating vacation expenses is all about knowing where to save and where to indulge. Prioritize space in accommodations, take advantage of free attractions, and consider how to make meals memorable without breaking the bank. Lastly, don’t forget to schedule in some downtime—it’s essential for a harmonious trip!
