As the school year comes to a close, the excitement of summer vacation fills the air. Everyone seems to be buzzing about their plans, and the question “What are you doing this summer?” pops up at every event. With twelve weeks of school break ahead (not that I’m counting or anything!), my family can only afford a single week away together due to work commitments and budget constraints.
While many parents are busy researching the best camps and programs, I have taken on the role of Head Counselor at Camp Stay-At-Home for the fourth consecutive summer. That’s right—I keep my kids home with me, not because I dislike camps, but because I prefer a more relaxed and budget-friendly approach. Here are six invaluable tips for navigating summer with your little ones:
- Popsicles Galore: Stock up on a seemingly endless supply of frozen treats. The freezer should be filled to the brim! Whenever the kids start arguing, feeling bored, or just need a little pick-me-up, popsicles are the perfect solution. Trust me, there’s little a popsicle can’t remedy.
- Rash Guards are a Must: Applying sunscreen can be a challenge, so I always dress my kids in rash guards. Not only does it protect their skin, but it also makes spotting them among a sea of other kids at the pool much easier. I’ve thought about implanting a tracking chip, but for now, these colorful shirts are my go-to identification method.
- Always Have Band-Aids Handy: Summer means more scrapes and bruises with all that outdoor play. Keep a stash of Band-Aids ready for everything from bug bites to minor cuts. A quick fix followed by a popsicle can go a long way in soothing their tears.
- Be the Planner: Avoid asking your kids what they want to do each day. Instead, take charge and create an itinerary. Unless you want to hear them suggest endless hours of screen time, it’s best to be the one making the decisions. Just remember: no eye contact while you assert your authority!
- Embrace Spontaneity: While having a plan is crucial, it’s equally important to allow for unstructured time. Often, when you’re committed to an outing, that’s when the kids find their groove and start playing nicely. Sometimes, I’ll pretend we have a plan even when we don’t, just to spark their creativity.
- Surprise Them: Kids adore surprises! It doesn’t have to be something extravagant like a theme park trip; even simple treats like s’mores for breakfast or an impromptu water balloon fight can create joy. By framing it as a surprise, you can keep them entertained and engaged for a little while longer.
