A Mom Shares a Humorous Photo, and the Internet Reminds Us It Lacks a Sense of Humor

Frustrated by the endless inquiries about her twin daughters, a mom decided to inject some humor into the situation. Unfortunately, the internet doesn’t always appreciate a good laugh.

Jessica Hart staged a playful photo featuring her twin girls holding signs that addressed the incessant questions she faces from strangers. She placed her two adorable daughters in their double stroller and took this snapshot:

Yes, they are mine. Yes, both girls. Yes, triplets would be harder. Conceived through you know what. It’s hard to fathom that some folks would ask such personal questions, but it seems to happen all too often.

Hart explained her intent with the photo: “I REALLY wanted to leave these signs on the stroller today. As a mom of twins, I get asked a barrage of questions every time I step out. Most people are just curious and coming from a good place, but it can get quite intrusive and exhausting. I knew I’d face a lot of questions in the city, but I chickened out and took the signs off before getting on the train! P.S. – it’s a joke, people 😜”

While she never took the signs out in public, she staged the photo as a lighthearted jest for her blog. But it seems humor is not on the menu for everyone! The offended internet was quick to let Hart know they found her joke inappropriate. They hit her with the usual critiques that often come from overly sensitive online commenters:

  1. The “Blessed” Brigade: “You’re so blessed!! I’ve always been intrigued by twins and have many questions!… A quick chat with you and your lovely girls might brighten someone’s day, especially those who aren’t as fortunate as you.”
  2. The Overdramatic Parent: “Wow, what a sad world! Let’s just ignore each other and never learn from one another! Maybe we shouldn’t even go outside anymore!”
  3. The ‘This Doesn’t Sit Well With Me’ Critic: “I find this very rude… It just doesn’t sit well with me. I love when people stop to chat about my kids.”
  4. The Guilt Tripper: “Think about the many people who can’t have children or have lost them. Asking questions might bring a little joy to their lives. Consider another perspective.”
  5. The Straight-Up Mean Commenter: “What’s wrong with someone wanting to chat about your adorable daughters? You sound like a sarcastic person (I can’t believe you used such language about their conception on cardboard).”

It’s likely that Hart interacts with people daily and doesn’t mind engaging in conversation. However, it’s understandable that the same questions can become tiresome. Anyone who’s been pregnant knows that benign interactions from well-meaning strangers can get old after a while. The photo was merely a humorous take on that experience, and if you don’t find it funny, that’s okay too. But there’s no need to tear down a mom for trying to have a little fun.

As Stephen Fry once said, “It’s now very common to hear people say, ‘I’m rather offended by that.’ As if that gives them certain rights. It’s nothing more than a whine. ‘I find that offensive.’ It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase.”

In summary, Jessica Hart’s humorous attempt to poke fun at the questions she faces as a mom of twins backfired when the internet responded with outrage instead of laughter. While her photo was meant to bring a smile, it sparked a conversation about sensitivity and humor in parenting.
