After a fantastic day at the beach, the sun sets, and suddenly, the rain starts to pour. Or maybe you’re simply too tired to explore more tourist attractions. No worries—your vacation can still be a blast! One of my favorite activities while traveling is to unwind with some card games in the hotel room. They’re perfect for a few reasons: 1) You can finally kick back and let your feet relax; 2) You won’t have to fret over losing a game piece and discovering it only when you return home; and 3) They ignite a light-hearted competitive spirit among family and friends! On your next adventure, pack these games, and you’ll always have a fun response to the inevitable “What should we do now?” and “I’m bored!” Plus, they take up hardly any space in your luggage, leaving you with more room for souvenirs!
Five Crowns
This is my all-time favorite card game! The objective is to finish with the lowest score after 11 rounds. Players start with three cards and can “go out” when they have three of a kind or three consecutive numbers of the same suit. The threes are wild in the first round. In the next round, you’ll need four cards, and the fours become wild. This pattern continues until you reach the kings round (13 cards). After someone goes out, you’ll tally the points of any cards left in your hand that aren’t part of a set. Beware, though: you might be leading the game, but one high-scoring hand can drop you to the bottom!
Scrabble Slam
I adore the fast-paced nature of this game. Start by placing the letters of any four-letter word on the table. Players take turns slamming down a card on top of any letter to create a new word—like changing “wine” to “fine.” The first player to use up all their cards wins. It’s quick, easy, and loads of fun!
Rat-a-Tat Cat
Each player lays four cards face down in front of them, peeking at two. The goal is to end with the lowest score. High cards feature rats, while low cards have cats. On your turn, draw a card and decide whether to swap it with one of your cards or put it back. Some cards allow you to peek at your remaining cards, while others let you trade with an opponent. When you think you have the four lowest cards, shout “Rat-a-Tat Cat!” Then, everyone adds up their cards. It’s a game of luck, strategy, and plenty of laughs!
Uno
A classic that never goes out of style! Great for kids of all ages, players match colors or numbers, but watch out for cards that force you to draw two or skip your turn. The first person to discard all their cards is the winner. And remember, when you have just one card left, don’t forget to shout “Uno!”
Regular Deck of Cards
The options are endless! Play Go Fish, Rummy, Crazy Eights, War, or even the classic 52-pickup.
While it’s important to let kids entertain themselves during your vacation, it’s reassuring to have these games in your arsenal. Traveling with family can be pricey, but avoiding stress, especially while on holiday? That’s priceless. For more insights on family planning, check out this guide on terms and conditions.
In summary, packing a few card games can transform your hotel downtime into an exciting bonding experience. From strategy to sheer luck, these games can keep everyone engaged and entertained, making your vacation all the more memorable.
