As a Gen-X working mom juggling two kids, I often find myself in a familiar tug-of-war with my time and energy. I could spend hours navigating the aisles of Target, but I’ve decided to embrace a new challenge—one that resonates with moms like me who are eager to reclaim their shopping sanity amidst the chaos of everyday life. Enter the #TargetChallenge.
Let’s get real: Target and I have a love affair that’s hard to break. I used to sneak in during my lunch breaks, filling up my cart with all sorts of goodies. My downfall? That tempting REDcard I got “to help my school,” which has undoubtedly contributed to my ongoing struggle with impulse shopping.
But now, it’s time to take charge. Armed with a bag of returns, I’ve set out to prove that I can enter the store, complete my mission, and leave without being lured by the siren song of cute décor and trendy accessories.
On my drive to Target, I mentally prepared myself for the challenge ahead. I steeled my resolve not to glance at the dollar section or let my eyes wander toward the jewelry display, especially not that gorgeous red floral necklace I’ve been eyeing. Thankfully, the home goods section is tucked away in the back, far enough from my reach.
Pulling into the parking lot, I felt a sense of determination wash over me. I grabbed an empty cart, took a deep breath, and entered the store clutching my returns: a puddle jumper my daughter never wore, an impulsively purchased mason jar, an American flag shirt that didn’t make it to the Fourth of July, a tank top that was more of a flop, an Orla Kiely yoga bag I had no use for, and two stunning floral throw pillows that I had to sneak past my husband.
As I stood in line, my mind wandered to the back of the store, tempted by memories of a beautiful floral lamp I had spotted previously. I even noticed a chevron ottoman on the return counter that caught my eye, but I reminded myself to look away.
When it was my turn, the cashier began processing my returns, and I was shocked at how much I had spent on those items. It was a reality check! She complimented my pillows, and I briefly questioned my sanity for returning them.
Then came the tempting offer of a gift card instead of cash. Smooth move, Target. I declined, determined to stick to my mission. With my return receipt in hand, I made my way out of the store without any bags or purchases.
I felt a rush of triumph as I left, practically dancing in my head because I had escaped the clutches of retail temptation. My car was where I left it, and I felt a wave of relief wash over me.
As I walked to my vehicle, I spotted another mom struggling with her own haul, wrestling with pillows and a suitcase adorned with cute cars. Our eyes met for a moment, and I offered a supportive smile. I knew her struggle all too well, but I also knew that it didn’t have to be our reality.
So, fellow moms, I challenge you to take the #TargetChallenge. Snap a photo of your empty cart and your victorious smile and share it with the hashtag. It’s time to get in, get out, and reclaim your day!
