The Top 8 Most Frustrating Habits of Family Members

Soon enough, I might just find myself in a cozy padded room, courtesy of my beloved family. They engage in all the usual antics—missing the toilet bowl, scattering dirty laundry, and letting leftovers explode in the microwave without lifting a finger to clean up. I can deal with the typical challenges that come with motherhood. However, it’s the extra quirks that really test my patience.

Here are eight family habits that could have me rocking back and forth in a corner before long:

  1. Using Bathmats as Sponges.
Bathmats are designed to keep you from slipping and to soak up excess water to protect the floors. Yet, in my home, they often become drenched and unmanageable. We aren’t at a water park, folks—please dry off before stepping out!
  2. Stuffing Trash Between Couch Cushions.
Really? Is it that hard to walk a few steps to the kitchen? Apparently so, because my family thinks it’s perfectly acceptable to stuff string cheese wrappers and snack debris between the cushions. Come on, people!
  3. Leaving Containers Next to the Fridge.
You can’t be serious! Is there a reason you can’t just open the fridge and put the orange juice back? Surely, something must be lurking inside to frighten you, because that level of laziness is just unreal.
  4. Going on a Tornado-Style Rampage When Searching for Items.
There’s a right way and a wrong way to look for things. The wrong way involves turning the house upside down in a frenzy. The right way? Just ask me! I know where the missing polka-dotted sock is—it’s still in the dryer!
  5. Taking Out the Trash but Leaving it NEXT to the Bin.
All it takes is a small effort to lift the lid and toss the trash in, yet I wake up to a yard decorated with banana peels and old snack wrappers. Seriously, it’s like Pepé Le Pew had a picnic right there!
  6. Wearing Dirty Shoes Indoors.
We have a shoe rack for a reason! Yet, my family members traipse around the house with muddy shoes and then claim they “forgot” to take them off. There’s a mop for a reason, people!
  7. Neglecting Utensils When Doing the Dishes.
What is it about forks and knives that makes them invisible? When my family washes dishes, somehow the utensils are always left behind. Guess who gets to deal with them? That’s right—me!
  8. Pressing Faces Against the Windows.
I spend hours trying to keep the inside of the windows clean. But do they really need to press their faces against the glass to peek inside? It looks like a ghost is playing peek-a-boo! Keep those mugs off the glass!

As much as I love my family, they certainly keep hair dye and stress relief companies in business. One day I might just end up sharing a room with Crazy Suzy at the “Nuttyside Inn.” Until then, I’ll take some preventive measures, like hiding the bathmats. Let the games begin!
