As my eldest child gears up for his first day of kindergarten, I’m filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Soon, he’ll board a bright yellow school bus, surrounded by older kids, navigating a new world filled with responsibilities and expectations. Like every parent, I’m thrilled for him to begin this journey, yet I can’t shake off the worries that keep creeping into my mind.
While many parents may fret about their little ones shedding a tear on the first day, my concerns are somewhat more specific. My energetic 5-year-old, who has a strong opinion on just about everything, is unlikely to cry—but I might, especially with these 25 worries looming over me:
- Will he be tempted to eat glue?
- What if a mischievous kid tries to bully him out of his snack?
- How will he react when there’s no TV time right after lunch?
- What if he drops an inappropriate word in class?
- Given that he takes forever in the bathroom, how will he manage when he needs to go?
- If a child claims falcons are stronger than lions, will my son argue loudly about it?
- He has no sense of modesty and loves being naked. What will happen at school?
- Will he continue his habit of urinating outside?
- What if he interrupts the teacher, insisting she’s wrong?
- In a moment of distraction, will he wipe his nose on her shirt?
- Will he tell everyone that his dad’s farts smell the worst?
- Is he going to skip the healthy food and just eat dessert?
- What if he shouts, “This is boring!” during an activity?
- Will gym class turn into a showcase for him to yell, “Look at me!”?
- Seriously, his bathroom habits are a concern. WHAT IF?
- Will he forget when to disembark from the bus?
- Is he going to embarrass me by saying something like, “My mom laughs so hard she pees her pants”?
- Will he be the only one without a new friend?
- What if he comes home claiming he has 17 girlfriends?
- Is he going to show off his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle underwear during Show and Tell? He has done that before!
- Will he leap up in class to display his ninja skills?
- Could he start a kindergarten fight club during recess with all the boys?
- Am I going to receive a call from the principal?
- Will he get creative with scissors and accidentally give someone a haircut?
- Will he be happy or upset to learn school is all day, every day?
I can’t help but think some of these scenarios are inevitable. I’m preparing myself for the possibilities, maybe even sweetening the deal with chocolate and a little wine for the teacher if needed. As I navigate the final days of summer, I’m holding on tight to my sanity!
