This School Year, I’m Taking on the Role of ‘That Mom’

As summer flew by—thanks in part to an abundance of snow days—I’m feeling energized and ready to embrace the new school year. My goal? To transform into That Mom—the one who stays organized and actively supports her kids’ success. Yes, it’s time to turn over a new leaf!

After all, I have three boys in three different schools this year: elementary, middle, and high school. Welcome to the chaotic whirlwind of juggling three distinct schedules, also known as the First Circle of Parenting Hell. But I’m determined to thrive, not just survive. Thanks to my newfound inspiration from Pinterest, I’ve been busy setting up charming Homework Centers and Snack Stations around the house. Last night, I prepped 25 individual snack packs filled with pretzels and carrot sticks—much more cost-effective than buying the prepackaged versions! And yes, I’m now the proud owner of an entire shelf in my fridge dedicated to bento box lunches filled with organic yogurt. This Average Mom is well on her way to becoming That Mom.

In my quest to prove I’ve fully embraced my new role, I won’t even grumble about the ridiculously specific school supply list. If the kids need a 1-ounce jumbo glue stick instead of a four-pack of smaller ones on sale, that’s what I’ll get! Even if I can’t find those pesky yellow, two-pocket, three-pronged folders because some crafty mom has hoarded them for resale, I’ll simply choose a green one and a yellow paper version. The teacher can decide which to keep—there’s my generous side shining through! That Mom is all about kindness.

And I’ll tackle all of this with a smile, because I’ve turned over a new leaf—and I also have my favorite happy hour spot, Bonefish Grill, conveniently next door. Yes, I’m embracing this new chapter, but let’s be real: this transformation requires a little liquid courage. As I settle into my bar stool, I quickly realize I’m not alone. Surrounding me are fellow moms—both Average Moms and That Moms—sipping on their pinot grigios while diving into some delicious Bang Bang Shrimp. It’s a beautiful mess of camaraderie, and I can’t help but smile. One of them even shifts to make room for me and hands me the cocktail menu.

Now, I just need to figure out which one has the black market school supplies. In summary, this school year, I am excited to step into the role of That Mom, fully embracing organization and creativity to support my kids. From handling school supplies to setting up snack stations, I’m ready for the adventure ahead, all while remembering to enjoy the little moments (and perhaps a cocktail or two).
