As we continue to expose our teens to the world, they reflect back to us what they see, revealing insights we may have overlooked. Yes, we observe it all.
While we, as parents, are accustomed to leading the way, our teenagers are embarking on their own journeys, discovering their paths and determining their destinations. They are the main characters in their narratives and are only beginning to understand what that truly entails.
This doesn’t mean they no longer require our support. Every hero needs a mentor—a guiding hand to show them how to wield their metaphorical light sabers. They require encouragement to recognize their potential, someone to direct them toward their futures. Once pointed in the right direction, they can begin their unique adventures. We have the wonderful opportunity to help launch these stories.
Being a hero can be tough; it’s a challenging and sometimes overwhelming task. During difficult times, these young heroes may falter, make poor choices, or even lash out at those who love them, confident that those bonds will endure.
Mistakes are part of the journey. What matters is how our teens rise after setbacks. Our role is to remind them of their strength and resilience.
What a privilege it is to witness this growth! It’s an honor to walk beside them, offering support, cheering them on, and lifting them up when they stumble. It’s incredible to spend our days with these once-tiny beings who now borrow our shoes so often. We get to reassure them: “I know the way, and I’ll guide you. But I also believe you’ll find your own path and teach me along the way.”
None of us are fully prepared for this journey of parenting teenagers, but that’s part of the adventure.
