It had been a considerable time since we ventured outdoors, and our garden was in dire need of attention. We spent hours tackling the overgrown lawn and weeds, filling up six yard waste bags in the process. It was incredibly satisfying to see our efforts pay off, restoring the neighborhood’s property values to their rightful state.

However, come Sunday, every movement was a reminder of our hard work. My arms, legs, shoulders, and back ached. My partner, Jake, felt the same way. The kids, on the other hand, seemed completely unfazed by the labor (and yes, they had helped us throughout).

The next day, I made my way to the clinic where I work as a physician, ready to see my patients. I had navigated the emotional fluctuations of perimenopause and was recovering from the physical toll of our gardening battle. Arriving early, I chatted with one of the medical assistants about her adorable 3-year-old son. Eager to see a picture, she pulled out her phone, and I couldn’t help but gush over how cute he was.

Then, the medical assistant popped the question: “Do you have any kids or grandchildren?” It was the first time in my life someone asked about grandchildren. I’m in my mid-40s, and I definitely envision grandchildren in my future, but hearing that question sparked a whirlwind of thoughts in my mind.

I often share with my kids how I cherish every stage of life I’ve experienced, as each one seems to enrich my journey further. Deep down, I take pride in my hot flashes (though I wouldn’t mind if they vanished), my gray hairs, and my muscles that protest after a day of weeding. I’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s been years since I’ve been carded, and I embrace this no-nonsense phase where I refuse to tolerate any drama.

That being said, I’d prefer people to ask about my children instead. And when I eventually welcome grandchildren into my life, I kindly request that you react with amazement and comment on how youthful I look for a grandmother. Oh, and please, crank up the air conditioning!
