With my older son starting school last week, I’ve found myself spending much more quality time with my 2-year-old, Leo. It’s been a delightful revelation, as I realized I hardly knew this little guy. From birth, he’s been strapped into a carrier and whisked away on our family adventures. Thankfully, Leo is an easygoing and sociable child, often going unnoticed as I juggled the demands of his big brother. But now that my older son is in school all day, I can finally focus on building a relationship with Leo. Here are nine activities I’ve discovered we can enjoy together now that his sibling is occupied.
1. Engage in Uninterrupted Conversations
I’ve learned Leo has plenty to share! I always thought he was just a quiet kid, but he was merely overshadowed by his brother’s chatter.
2. Remind Myself of His Middle Name
It’s surprising how memory can slip; I need to check what his middle name is because it’s currently escaping me.
3. Explore New Foods Together
Poor Leo often misses out on trying new meals because his brother is quick to declare dishes as “YUCK!” I’ve found that Leo is pretty open to sandwiches, regardless of how they’re cut.
4. Appreciate His Eye Color
I recently noticed that his eyes are a beautiful shade of blue, a detail I overlooked during the busyness of family life.
5. Allow Him to Wake from Naps Naturally
Instead of being startled awake by his brother’s loud antics, Leo can now wake when he’s ready, which makes for a much happier toddler.
6. Enjoy Peaceful Playtime
We can build train tracks without the fear of Batman crashing through our setup. It’s a refreshing change!
7. Discover His Social Skills
During a recent trip to the park, I was thrilled to see him climb into the sandbox and confidently introduce himself to another child, saying, “Hi, Mia.”
8. Curious About His Skills
I’ve been amazed to find out that Leo learned to use a fork all on his own while I was busy managing dinner conversations with his brother.
9. Give Him a Calm Bath
Bath time has become much more enjoyable without the splash-fest that often ensued with his overly affectionate brother.
It’s been a joy to build a connection with this little guy who patiently occupied himself while I navigated the demands of his sibling. Leo is truly wonderful, and I’m excited to discover more about him – at least until the clock strikes 2:30 PM!
