There are certainly perks to growing up in the 21st century, but I can’t help but feel a bit sad for my children, who will miss out on some of the childhood experiences that shaped my own formative years:
Local Arcades
Long before every household had gaming consoles and smartphones, arcades were the ultimate hangout. A quarter could unlock hours of fun, and everyone knew your initials on the high score board.
UHF Channels
Being home sick had its silver lining: an endless array of classic black-and-white sitcoms on those lesser-known channels. The fuzzy reception only added to the nostalgic charm.
Handwritten Love Letters
No text or emoji can compare to a heartfelt letter, meticulously folded and tucked away in a shoebox, cherished and re-read for years.
Surprise Parties
These delightful celebrations were a thrill back in the day, unlike today’s social media age where secrets are nearly impossible to keep.
Battle of the Network Stars
Where else could you witness Mr. T and Mr. Drummond racing each other in inflatable canoes? Now, that was reality TV at its purest.
Deciphering Song Lyrics
Before Google, figuring out the lyrics to your favorite songs meant repeat listens and hilarious debates with friends over the correct words. Who could forget the confusion between “I’m a desk, I’m a desk” and “Amadeus, Amadeus”?
The Fat Envelope
Nowadays, college admissions are often delivered via email, lacking the suspense of waiting for that life-changing envelope to arrive in the mail.
ABC Afterschool Specials
These classic shows tackled serious topics like teen pregnancy and drug use with a cheesy, yet endearing, ’80s flair that is hard to replicate.
Counting Down the Days
My kids have countdown apps on their phones, but there’s a certain satisfaction in crossing off each day on a physical calendar, especially as summer break approached.
Waiting for Your Jam on the Radio
Before streaming services, the only way to hear your favorite song was by hoping it played on the radio. Some even called in requests to the station!
Collecting McDonald’s Glasses
Remember the excitement of collecting limited edition glasses and the sibling rivalry over who got to drink from the Hamburglar cup?
Schoolhouse Rock
Learning the preamble of the Constitution or multiplication tables through catchy tunes was an unforgettable part of growing up.
The Way-Back Seat
Riding in the way-back of a station wagon was a blend of fun and chaos, offering a unique experience during family errands.
The Love Boat
Before talent competitions took over, this was the show where Hollywood’s former stars gathered for some lighthearted fun.
I think it might be time to throw on an oversized sweater and find a Brady Bunch marathon on TV Land. Maybe I’ll invite the kids to join me for a little nostalgic bonding.

In summary, while the modern world has its perks, there are some timeless experiences that today’s kids might never get to enjoy. Let’s cherish those memories while sharing them with the next generation.
