My Son’s Heartfelt Challenge to Us All
“Mom, why can’t everyone be nice?”
This innocent question arose during a routine visit to the dentist for my son’s biannual teeth cleaning. While our lives are enriched by wonderful people, there are always those whose words and actions can hurt us deeply. When venturing out into public spaces, the unpredictability of people’s reactions can be daunting.
At our dentist’s office, we are fortunate to be surrounded by dedicated professionals who consistently go above and beyond to support individuals on the autism spectrum. Although I anticipated a warm reception for my son’s appointment, I was unprepared for the extraordinary encounter that unfolded.
Just moments after we arrived, an incredibly kind, grandmotherly woman entered the waiting area. She introduced herself and, with a beaming smile, asked if she could chat with my son. I was taken aback but nodded, and then sat in amazement as she effortlessly engaged him in conversation.
Ignoring his fidgeting, she asked delightful questions about his favorite games, recent Lego creations, and even which Marvel superhero he admired most. I instinctively reached to calm him with our subtle shoulder-pat signal, but the lovely lady stopped me, insisting it was wonderful to see him so happy.
When it was time for my son’s cleaning, she leaned close to me and whispered, “It’s okay. My grandson has autism too. Aren’t they the sweetest kids?” With that, she offered another warm smile, patted my shoulder, and walked with my son to the back.
On the car ride home, my son pondered aloud, “Mom, why can’t everyone be kind?” The genuine kindness he received from a stranger made such an impression that he urged me to tell others about the importance of kindness and how everyone deserves to feel valued.
Imagine if we all made a commitment to show kindness and grace to those around us. What if we used our own experiences to uplift others? What if we became that person who brings hope to those facing challenges?
What if we offered love to those who may not extend it back? What if we took a moment to encourage someone or simply smile at a stranger instead of rushing past them? What if we lent a hand to a mother struggling to soothe her child during a meltdown, or assisted someone on crutches carrying their bags?
We’ve all experienced the sting of unkindness, whether intentional or born from ignorance. Yet, we’ve also felt the warmth of kindness and respect—an experience that can heal wounds we didn’t even know we had.
I understand that many of us, whether facing our own challenges or caring for those who do, often feel like we have nothing left to give. But if we recall how it felt when someone reached out to us in kindness, we might tap into a strength we didn’t know we possessed.
My son invites you to take the kindness challenge—to actively choose kindness because every person counts. I’m accepting that challenge. Will you join us?
